This article contains potential spoilers for the Elbaf flashback of One Piece.

Many are arguing that the Elbaf arc of One Piece is already among the best in the entire franchise due to all the incredible reveals made within it, and with the old generation flashback that is currently being shown, this is definitely the case. This flashback has given fans a look at the state of the world decades ago, as well as finally shedding light on the God Valley Incident, which is one of the most hyped events in history.

With Chapter 1158 of One Piece being the official setup for this legendary event, it came as a shock to everyone when a 17-year-old Monkey D. Dragon made an appearance on the island as a Navy recruit. What's even more surprising are his actions on God Valley itself, which many fans believe will eventually be what leads to him finding his legendary Devil Fruit. So, in this article, let's go over how Oda has perfectly set this up.

Story Arc

Loguetown

The topic of Monkey D. Dragon's Devil Fruit has been one of the main topics of debate within the community for over two decades. Making his debut way back in the Loguetown arc, Dragon's abilities have purposefully been kept a secret by Oda, which fans expect is mainly due to the fact that he will end up being incredibly powerful, so his powers must come into play towards the end of the series.

In Chapter 1158, the groundwork for the God Valley Incident has officially been laid, with Shakky being kidnapped as the main prize of the Native Hunting Competition and the residents of the island all being captured as the 'rabbits' for the Celestial Dragons to hunt. One of the most striking moments in this entire chapter came after Garling stabbed the mother of Shanks and Shamrock upon deciding that he wanted Shakky to be his wife. Because of this, Dragon came upon her at death's door, where she begged him to protect her children from their father.

One Piece Shanks D and Celestial Dragon

This is where the crux of this theory comes in. It's known that there were many prizes for the winners of the Native Hunting Competition, most of which were Devil Fruits. These weren't just ordinary Devil Fruits; rather, they were some of the strongest ones in the world, since both Kaido's Azure Dragon Mythical Zoan and Kuma's Paw-Paw Fruit were included among these prizes, of which there were 9 in total. Fans believe that one of these may have been the legendary Wind Logia or Storm-Storm Paramecia that Dragon has always been theorized as having.

Now, upon being entrusted to save her children from Garling, Dragon likely took the children away and hid them somewhere in order to protect them. In One Piece: Red, it was revealed that the Roger Pirates found Shanks as a baby in a chest. Though the events of the film aren't canon, much of the surrounding lore of the world is, and this section regarding Shanks' birth is largely believed to be as well.

A child is a parent's weak spot.

This would check out, since the Roger Pirates may have come upon this chest at the close of the God Valley Incident. Essentially, this theory states that it was Dragon who put Shanks inside this chest in the first place as a means of hiding and protecting him from being taken by Garling to be raised as a Celestial Dragon, which ended up working out since Shanks was then taken by the Roger Pirates instead. By replacing the Devil Fruit inside the chest with the child, it serves as the perfect explanation of how everything worked out for everyone involved.

It's known that only the strongest Devil Fruits were kept as prizes in the God Valley Incident, so it's possible that Dragon's own fruit, theorized to be a Wind Logia or a Paramecia that allows him to control the weather, may also have been there. Upon finding the chest, Dragon took the fruit out, put Shanks in, and likely would have eaten the fruit to fight against some powerful foes in God Valley.

The Likely Powers Of Monkey D. Dragon's Devil Fruit Are Extensive

An Amazing Devil Fruit Power

  • Dragon's Devil Fruit could be a Paramecia, Logia, or even a Mythical Zoan.

At the current moment, Dragon's Devil Fruit power is the most mysterious one in the series. From the incredibly brief applications of it that we have seen, this Devil Fruit's powers could fall into any of the three categories. Some fans believe it to be a Paramecia that allows him to control the weather, letting him create storms and even form massive clouds of lightning and powerful gales of wind.

Conversely, the most popular and likely explanation of his abilities could possibly be through a Wind Logia, which, as the name suggests, allows him to create and control the wind itself, which would just be an overpowered ability for the world of One Piece. Lastly, some even believe that it could actually be a Mythical Zoan God Fruit that lets him become the fabled Rain God that is spoken about in Skypiea, which would just add to his strength and legend even more.

One Piece can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
