There was once a time in the early days of One Piece where Logia Devil Fruits were the greatest power in the world. These fruits have the unique properties of bestowing upon their users the ability to become and manipulate natural elements to their fullest degree, allowing them to summon a near-infinite quantity of their respective element in battle. The greatest property of these fruits, however, is the intangibility they grant their users.
As could very clearly be seen, this was an unfairly powerful aspect early on in One Piece. However, as the series has progressed and the power system has gotten more fleshed out with the full establishment of Haki, many believe that Logia fruits have lately been on the back burner to a degree. So, here's how the series can make the users of these Devil Fruits much stronger for the Final War and give them back the status they once held.
One Piece: These Devil Fruits Are As Strong As Luffy's God Fruit
The Nika fruit is currently the strongest Devil Fruit that we know of right now, but these Devil Fruits are likely just as powerful as it!

As stated previously, Logia Devil Fruits were once the greatest threat in the One Piece world. This mostly had to do with their inherent property of letting their users become completely intangible, which meant that they could bypass any attacks that their opponents could throw at them. Only those with specific counters to their powers could take them on, such as when Luffy imbued his strikes with water against Crocodile's sand powers or when his rubber body was essentially impervious to Enel's lightning.
However, realizing how overpowered these fruits were for the series, Oda introduced Haki, which was already an established part of the power system since Chapter 1 but was only properly fleshed out far later on. Because of this, all Logia users saw a massive downgrade in their power ranking across the board since their most broken ability, the intangibility, was completely negated.
Even characters capable of using Armament Haki to a very basic degree could now hurt these once invincible characters. Of course, they retained their offensive potency since that is directly linked to the power of their respective element as well as their creativity in using their fruit, but their defense was greatly compromised, causing much of the fandom to deliberate about how Logia Devil Fruit users could stand against the world-shaking powers of many of the Final War characters.
The answer to this is simple and has already been established in the series; Devil Fruit Awakening. Awakening is essentially when the mind and body of a user finally catch up to the powers of the fruit itself, which can only happen after one spends a lot of time with their fruit. It's theorized that when a user aligns themselves with their fruit's true purpose on the brink of death, the fruit can then undergo an Awakening. This could explain why Whitebeard never went through this, since the destructive nature of his fruit was at odds with his dreams of family.
There is another stage entirely to the powers of a Devil Fruit: Awakening! It's very rare, but some powers can awaken and affect objects aside from the wielder!
So far, there has never been a Logia Awakening in the series, but it is theorized that both Akainu and Kuzan went through this during their 10-day battle on Punk Hazard. One of the main properties of Awakening, at least for Paramecias, is that they allow the fruit's powers to be used externally onto other objects or people, so the most common theory for Logias is that the Awakening allows the user to completely change their external environment into one that mirrors their respective element.
For example, if Crocodile awakens his fruit, he could create an entire desert around him, which would make his offense and defense far more potent and would also give him far greater control over his sand powers. Similarly, Akainu could create a volcanic, magma-filled environment, while Kuzan could summon an icy tundra akin to Antarctica. The current state of Punk Hazard implies that both of these characters underwent Awakening.
One Piece: Why Whitebeard Was Greater Than Roger And Rocks
Although history remembers Roger as the Pirate King and Rocks as the greatest of his era, here's why Whitebeard was even better than them!
Why This Would Be A Sufficient Power-Up For The Final War
Logia Awakening Could Make The Difference
- Logia Awakenings could make their users just as strong as they once were.
When the Final War comes around, it will see the battle of the most powerful heroes and villains that Oda has ever introduced in the story. Because of this, Logia Awakenings would be incredibly dangerous for anyone who goes up against them, since they would be fighting in an environment whose every inch can be controlled to whatever degree the Logia user chooses. This is such a huge power-up that someone even on the level of Luffy's Gear 5 would have trouble with it.
This would be akin to a Domain Expansion from Jujutsu Kaisen, since the environment created by the awakened Logia user could be manipulated however they wanted. Seeing as how half of Punk Hazard is on fire and the other half is frozen perpetually, without either Akainu or Kuzan being present there, proves that the power of a Logia Awakening is definitely one of the strongest in One Piece.
