Summary
- Luffy's devil fruit, the Human-Human Fruit Model: Sun God Nika, breaks the rules and is a unique Zoan fruit.
- Zoan fruits like Luffy's have three forms: normal, hybrid, and full transformation.
- Luffy's Gear 5 may represent his full transformation with the Sun God Nika abilities.
One Piece Devil Fruits tend to be wildly creative and freely explore the limits of what seems to be a simple power at first. Taking, for example, Luffy’s simple ability to stretch his body, the character is eventually able to perform some incredible abilities from this simple power, like Gear 3 and Gear 4. However, with only a few exceptions, there are some limiting factors and rules that each Devil Fruit follows, allowing these seemingly wildly different abilities to fall into specific categories based on these rules.
Interestingly enough, Luffy’s Devil Fruit, the Human-Human Fruit Model: Sun God Nika seems to be one of those fruits that breaks all the rules. Technically being a Zoan fruit after being presented as a Paramecia Fruit, the Nika Fruit is one of the most unique Zoan fruits in the series so far. However, being a Zoan fruit, some members of the One Piece community are curious about what each of the forms of the Nika Fruit would be.

Luffy's Devil Fruit Was Revealed To Be A Zoan Type Fruit
The Mythical Zoan Human-Human Fruit Model: Sun God Nika
Devil Fruit in One Piece comes in three potential categories: Zoan, Paramecia, and Logia. Luffy’s Devil Fruit, the Gum-Gum Fruit, was originally believed to belong to the Paramecia category, a group that covers most of the miscellaneous Devil Fruits. However, after awakening his Devil Fruit during his fight with Kaido, it was revealed that his fruit was actually the Human-Human Fruit Model: Sun God Nika, an incredibly powerful Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit.

Unlike Paramecia Devil Fruits, Zoan fruits give the user the ability to transform into something else, mainly an animal or mythical being. Specifically, these characters can have three unique forms, a standard form, a hybrid form, and a full transformation. For example, Kaido, with his Azure Dragon Fruit, possessed a base form, a form where he had both the properties of a human and dragon, and a full dragon form.
Luffy's Devil Fruit Should Have Three Distinct Forms
A Normal Form, A Hybrid Form, And A Full Transformation
- Luffy's Devil Fruit Should Have Multiple Forms
- Gear 5 May Be His Full Transformation
By this logic, it would make sense that Luffy would have three forms with his Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit as well. As of now, however, it seems that fans have only been explicitly shown two of the three forms in the series so far. Luffy’s standard form, for example, seems to be the base form that he spent most of the series in.

One Piece 1146 is highly anticipated by fans. It could reveal more about Rocks D. Xebec.
On the other hand, many fans believe that Luffy’s full transformation is Gear 5, the ability that came when he awakened his Devil Fruit. This ability gives Luffy many of the properties and personality traits of the Sun God Nika, with things like the legendary figures' endless smiles and the white clouds surrounding him. Although it’s hard to tell if this is the full transformation or not, based on how Luffy’s personality slightly changes in this form, it would make sense if it was the full transformation.
Luffy May Not Have A Hybrid Form
A Hybrid Form With A Human Fruit Would Just Be A Human
As for a hybrid form, so far, there is no evidence that Luffy possesses one. While some say that Gear 4 could be a potential hybrid state, others believe that since Luffy is a human with a version of the Human-Human Fruit, there is no difference between his base form and hybrid form. However, there is potential for Luffy to access some of his Gear 5 abilities in his base form in the future of One Piece, something that could also be considered a hybrid form.
I'm not a Zoan-type! - Luffy before learning he is a Zoan-type
In the end, Luffy’s powerful Devil Fruit, being such a unique case in the One Piece universe, is incredibly hard to place into any defined categories. Specifically, trying to establish set Zoan forms for Luffy is far harder than it would be for any other character in the series so far. Though being hard to pin down is something that makes sense for Luffy. This is just another example of how Luffy is the most free character in One Piece. Even the laws and logic of the surrounding universe don’t apply to him.
