This article contains spoilers for the One Piece series.

Luffy is the protagonist of the One Piece series and is often at the forefront of any big battle that unfolds. This means Luffy has had to grow and adapt in the midst of battles, and quickly. Luffy has his basic transformations that all fans know about, such as his major Gears, but he also has some more obscure ones that fans might not even remember exist.

Nightmare Luffy

A Form Attained Thanks To Moria’s Powers

Nightmare Luffy from One Piece

Nightmare Luffy was quite a central part of the Thriller Bark arc of One Piece, and yet, many people forget about it when it comes to discussing the many transformations of Luffy. That is because, in big parts, it’s only a temporary form that Luffy can’t achieve on his own.

To become Nightmare Luffy, he must be fed quite a few of Moria’s shadows. But when he does achieve this form, he becomes quite strong. It would definitely be interesting to see this form return if and when Moria makes a comeback into the main plot.

Mini Gear 4

A Partial Gear 4 Transformation

Mini Gear 4 is one of Luffy’s newest, yet already overlooked transformations. Luffy first uses this quite recently, in One Piece chapter 1127 of the manga. This transformation is like a partial Gear 4 transformation. Luffy doesn’t go full Gear 4, and instead, can choose what part of his body he wants to transform.

This is reminiscent of Gear 3, and just goes to show how much control Luffy has gained over his forms, especially after his awakening in Wano.

Water Luffy

An Improvised Form Luffy Used to Attack Sir Crocodile

Water Luffy is technically Luffy’s first ever transformation in One Piece, but many fans have overlooked it due to its gimmicky nature. During the Arabasta arc, Luffy figured out that he could hurt Crocodile using water. So to fight adequately, he filled up on water, and used it to attack Crocodile. This transformation, however, was not at all successful in taking down Sir Crocodile.

Gear 2 + 3 Luffy

First Used Against Gekko Moria

Gear 2 and Gear 3 were, for a long time, Luffy’s main gears that he used in battles. He unlocked these two during the events of Enies Lobby and kept using them afterwards.

In Thriller Bark, fans even saw a combined transformation where Luffy used both at the same time. He used these two to inflict damage on Gekko Moria, which was effective, but it put tremendous strain on his body.

Tankman (Normal Version)

A Never-Seen Version of Gear 4

Gear 4 was Luffy’s biggest power-up after the timeskip until the events of Wano, where he unlocked Gear 5. Gear 4 has many versions, and so far, fans have seen Boundman, Snakeman, and Tankman: Full Version.

Boundman was first used against Doflamingo, Snakeman against Katakuri, and Tankman against Cracker. The Tankman Luffy he used against Cracker wasn’t a normal one. Luffy called that version of Tankman the Manpuku Version because of how full he was. It’s unknown if Oda will ever reveal the normal version to the fans.

Luffy Candle Champion

A Form He Created Thanks To Mr. 3

Another overlooked transformation that Luffy has had in One Piece is his Candle Champion form. This form was only used once, during Impel Down. Luffy can’t acquire this form on his own, as it’s made using the Doru Doru no Mi.

This transformation grants Luffy wax boxing gloves and boots. This is both great offensively, and also defensively when fighting against an enemy like Magellan, who makes use of poison.
