Devil Fruits are widely known as the iconic main power system of One Piece, as these mysterious fruits grant fantastical abilities to anyone who eats one. However, author Eiichiro Oda has already introduced over one hundred different Devil Fruits in the series (and that’s not even counting all the non-canon ones), so, naturally, not all of them can be special.

While most of them are surprisingly mundane, there’s a fair share that are particularly notorious for their unique abilities, the impact they have on the world or their connection to the series’ intriguing and expansive lore, and the following eight Devil Fruits are the most prominent examples of this phenomenon in the entire One Piece franchise (so far).

Forget Zoan, Logia and Paramecia Are One Piece’s Most Powerful Devil Fruits

God Fruits are essentially fan terms for the strongest Devil Fruits in the series, so let's look at those from the Logia and Paramecia variety.

Magu Magu No Mi

One Of The Most Destructive Devil Fruits In The Series

  • Eaten by: Sakazuki (Akainu)
  • Type: Logia
  • Debut: Chapter 554 (Manga) Episode 463 (Anime)

Logias are, by nature, way more distinctive than the other types of Devil Fruits, seeing as they allow their users to turn into, generate and manipulate a specific natural element. But, among all the impressive Logia Devil Fruits introduced in the series so far, very few of them are as impressive as Sakazuki’s Magu Magu no Mi.

This is considered one of the most dangerous and destructive Devil Fruits in the world, because it allows Akainu to generate limitless amounts of magma and lava that can burn his enemies (and victims) to death in mere seconds. On top of that, he has proven to be quite efficient with it, since he can even create lava constructs in the shape of fierce dogs and spawn massive meteor showers that can wipe out an entire battlefield. At the end of the day, the Magu Magu no Mi is oddly fitting for someone who used to be the Marines’ deadliest admiral and who was named Fleet Admiral after the time skip.

Pika Pika No Mi

Grants Its User Incredible Speed And Can Generate Laser Beams

  • Eaten by: Borsalino (Kizaru)
  • Type: Logia
  • Debut: Chapter 506 (Manga) Episode 400 (Anime)

If there’s one other Logia Devil Fruit that’s even more notorious than the Magu Magu no Mi, that would be the Pika Pika no Mi, which gives its user the ability to control, create and turn into light at will. For starters, these powers allow Admiral Borsalino to literally move around at the speed of light, thus making him the fastest fighter in the entire series.

Sanji working as a waiter in Baratie - One Piece
One Piece: Sanji And Other Powerful Cooks In The Series

These powerful pirates would have one believe that crossing a cook at sea is equivalent to death.

On top of that, he can also use his element to make constructs (like a sword), summon clones of himself and even shoot destructive beams at his opponents. This last ability is the reason the Pika Pika no Mi has had an everlasting impact on the world of One Piece, since Doctor Vegapunk researched it in order to recreate these aforementioned laser beams, and eventually implemented them on his biological weapons, the Pacifistas.

Uo Uo No Mi, Model: Seiryu

Allows Its User To Turn Into A Giant Monster With Multiple Abilities

  • Eaten by: Kaido
  • Type: Mythical Zoan
  • Debut: Chapter 921 (Manga) Episode 921 (Anime)

In-universe, Kaido is known as the “Strongest Creature in the World” so it’s no surprise that he has eaten a notorious Devil Fruit that has helped him earn and live up to that reputation. The Uo Uo No Mi, Model: Seiryu is a mythical Zoan that allows him to turn into a giant Azure Dragon that can fly, shoot potent fire blasts, manipulate the weather and conjure Flame Clouds, not to mention that this transformation also enhances his already-impressive strength and durability.

Thanks to the combination of his Devil Fruit and his Haki, Kaido was able to become one of the most powerful characters in the series, and it literally took the combined efforts of multiple capable fighters to finally take him down once and for all. Additionally, the Uo Uo No Mi, Model: Seiryu had an impact on the world of One Piece, not only because it was one of the Celestial Dragon’s prizes during the God Valley Incident, but also because Doctor Vegapunk was also able to create an almost perfect replica of it, which was eaten by Kouzuki Momonosuke.

Nikyu Nikyu No Mi

Can Extract People’s Pain And Make Them Travel To Any Location

  • Eaten by: Bartholomew Kuma
  • Type: Paramecia
  • Debut: Chapter 473 (Manga) Episode 368 (Anime)

The Nikyu Nikyu no Mi is yet another special Devil Fruit that was present at God Valley and the person who ate it, Bartholomew Kuma, ended up having a crucial role in this world-changing incident. This Paramecia manifested cat-like paws on his hands that can repel pretty much anything, and Kuma quickly learned how to use them to save people by making them travel to other places in an instant.

If that ability wasn’t already incredible enough, the Nikyu Nikyu no Mi has many other practical uses, like extracting specific abstract elements from people’s bodies (like physical pain) and creating a destructive bomb of repulsive power called Ursus Shock. With this Devil Fruit, Kuma was able to save his home island, earn the title of Warlord of the Sea and become one of the most significant (and tragic) historical figures in the world.

Yami Yami No Mi

Can Nullify Other Devil Fruit’s Powers

  • Eaten by: Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard)
  • Type: Logia
  • Debut: Chapter 440 (Manga) Episode 325 (Anime)

The fact that Blackbeard, an evil mastermind with a brilliant strategic mind, spent literal years of his life waiting for the Yami Yami no Mi to resurface, and didn’t hesitate to kill one of his own friends in order to obtain it, is enough proof of how truly special this Devil Fruit is. For starters, it allows him to generate, manipulate and turn into a specific element (just like all other Logias) and, in this case, it’s darkness itself.

With this unique power, Blackbeard can create massive pools of pitch-black darkness that defy gravity and absorb anything they touch. On top of that, the Yami Yami no Mi is especially notorious because it can temporarily nullify other Devil Fruits’ powers in battle, and it’s commonly assumed that this is the reason Blackbeard was able to absorb and steal the powers of Whitebeard’s Gura Gura no Mi during the Summit War of Marineford. However, the Yami Yami no Mi has a major weakness: unlike other Logias, the darkness doesn’t make its user intangible, meaning that he’s still susceptible to most physical attacks.

Ope Ope No Mi

Can Be Used To Perform The Perennial Youth Operation

  • Eaten by: Trafalgar D. Water Law
  • Type: Paramecia
  • Debut: Chapter 504 (Manga) Episode 398 (Anime)

There’s no denying that the Ope Ope no Mi is possibly the most versatile Devil Fruit in the series, seeing as it allows its current user, Trafalgar D. Water Law, to generate a dome-like “room” in which he can do almost anything: teleport stuff around, disassemble and reassemble objects and living beings, generate shocks of electricity and even swap around the souls of other people.

But the Ope Ope no Mi’s biggest strengths are its enhanced medical capabilities, as Law is a doctor that can use his powers to heal pretty much any ailment, injury or sickness he encounters. This Devil Fruit has quite a fascinating history, not only because Donquixote Rosinante literally sacrificed his life, so Law could eat it and cure his Ambear Lead Syndrome, but also because it can allegedly be used to perform the Perennial Youth Operation, which grants another person eternal youth in exchange for the user’s life. This has led many people (both in-universe and in real life) to theorize that the Ope Ope no Mi has been used to make Nerona Imu immortal.

Five Unnamed Mythical Zoans

The World Government’s Final Line Of Defense

  • Eaten by: The Five Elders
  • Type: Mythical Zoan
  • Debut: Chapter 1094 (Manga) Episode 1128 (Anime)

For literal decades, both One Piece fans and the characters within the story mistakenly assumed that the Five Elders – the group of Celestial Dragons that serve as the highest authorities of the World Government – didn’t have any battle capabilities and were just mere politicians. However, everybody was proven wrong in the recent Egghead Arc, where they revealed their ability to turn into massive and deadly mythical creatures.

Saturn can turn into a Gyuki, Nusjuro can turn into a Bakotsu, Warcury can turn into a Fengxi, Ju Peter can turn into a Sandworm and Mars can turn into an Itsumade. These five (currently unnamed) Mythical Zoans are notorious for giving their users highly-powerful transformations that can be used to wipe out entire armies and destroy islands with ease. The fact that they were specifically chosen to be eaten by the highest authorities in the World Government is solid proof of how special and unique they are.

Gomu Gomu No Mi / Hito Hito No Mi Model: Nika

The Devil Fruit Of The Legendary Warrior Of Liberation

  • Eaten by: Monkey D. Luffy
  • Type: Mythical Zoan (Previously classified as a Paramecia)
  • Debut: Chapter 1 (Manga) Episode 1 (Anime)

For many years, the World Government tried to hide the existence of a legendary Devil Fruit that would allow its user to transform into the Sun God, Nika, who was once known as a symbol of liberation by the oppressed people of the world. Despite their malicious efforts, this Devil Fruit was eventually stolen by the Red Hair Pirates and eaten (by accident) by the protagonist of the series, Monkey D. Luffy.

With the rubber-based abilities of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, Luffy was able to achieve all sorts of world-changing feats, like defeating multiple Warlords of the Sea, raiding Impel Down and participating in the Paramount of Marineford. But, of course, he got even stronger after he awakened it, which allowed him to defeat Kaido and go toe-to-toe against the Five Elders. As impressive and funny as the cartoon powers of the Hito Hito No Mi Model: Nika are, this Devil Fruit has a notorious significance in the lore of this series, as it embodies the properties of the Sun God that has already saved the world twice, and who will save it once again in the near future.
