This article contains spoilers from One Piece's Elbaf Arc.

Haki has always been an essential part of One Piece, and in the post-timeskip, it's become more important than ever before. While Devil Fruits are still the primary power system of the One Piece world, those with Haki aren't to be underestimated either. Haki is a spiritual energy that is present within everyone, and is quite versatile, given that it can be used to boost sensory perception, counter Devil Fruit abilities, boost offense and defense, and with its rarest form, overwhelm the enemies completely.

Most characters in One Piece possess a basic level of Haki, and of course, the elites possess the advanced-grade Haki, as seen in arcs like Whole Cake Island and Wano. But, Oda has recently shown that Haki can indeed be taken to even higher levels beyond the advanced grade. The next level of Haki can only be tapped into once someone understands the very essence of it. By learning to channel Haki efficiently, one can control how much Haki they want to put out, and thus increase its mass. This mass of Haki is essential when it comes to fighting enemies with strong Haki, or those with immortal abilities, such as the Holy Knights or Five Elders.

Oda Confirms Haki's Next Level Requires Mass Control

Haki is a very unique power that is very difficult to master. However, the elite fighters of the One Piece world usually know how to get the best out of this power. Haki isn't simply about channeling power into attacks. While that's the surface-level version of it, Oda has shown time and again that control and efficiency matter a lot.

It's all about the mass, Garp! — Roger to Garp, One Piece 1165

Without Haki control, one cannot truly bring out their power, as mentioned by Scopper Gaban to Zoro, who is quite bad at using this power properly. Similarly, without efficiency, Haki is simply wasted and the blows aren't nearly as effective. To take Haki to the next level, both control and efficiency are required, and all this leads to a major reveal that Oda made in One Piece chapter 1165 about the mass of Haki.

Technically speaking, Haki having a mass of its own that can be fully adjusted isn't something that fans didn't know. However, Oda has now confirmed that the manipulation of the mass of Haki can help bypass powers such as Immortality, and even cancel out the Abyss, among other things.

The True Power Of Haki Can Only Be Brought Out By Mass Control

Once an individual learns to control the mass of Haki properly, they can freely adjust how much Haki they want to put out, and more than that, they can increase its efficiency so the Haki is concentrated, and the wastage is limited. Roger and Garp showed the peak of Haki mass control in One Piece chapter 1165, when they unleashed their strongest and most potent Haki to push past the barrier of Rocks D. Xebec.

Only then were they able to permanently injure his immortal body with tremendous strength. Moving forward, Luffy needs to learn to control the mass of Haki better. All his Haki attacks need to have a more concentrated and higher Haki mass, which will allow him to bypass the Immortality of the Holy Knights.

Roger And Garp Were Haki Masters

For now, Luffy isn't on that level yet. But, Garp and Roger showed how incredible their Haki mastery was in their prime days. In the current era, only Shanks stands tall as the best Haki user. Luffy strives to get to that level, but it'll be a while before he actually manages to get there.

Eiichiro Oda's One Piece will be on break next week. One Piece Chapter 1166 will be out in two weeks. The official release date of One Piece Chapter 1166 is November 23, 2025. Fans can read the chapter for free on Manga Plus.
