One key detail that some fans might've completely discarded, however, is the true identity of Gunko. Fans know Gunko is rather special in One Piece, even among the Holy Knights, and that Oda is paying special attention to her. More recently, even Brook somehow recognized her, which makes most fans believe that they know each other somehow. The truth behind it all might just be in Brook's backstory.

Brook Recognized Gunko In One Piece

  • Brook Couldn't Believe Himself When He Saw Gunko
  • Gunko Felt Pain After Hitting Brook

In One Piece chapter 1147, Oda showed the fans a very interesting exchange. As was clear to see, Gunko had succeeded in capturing all the Straw Hats that were on the Svalr in the chapter, and as they lost, Gunko started making demands. Specifically, her demand was for none other than Soul King Brook.

Become my music slave! — Gunko to Brook

Gunko wanted Brook to be her personal music slave, to which Brook responded by clear rejection. Moments before that, however, Brook was shocked to realize that this wasn't the first time he was seeing Gunko. Brook has seen Gunko before and he recognizes her.

At the same time, Gunko, who proceeded to kick Brook, felt pain in her heart as well, which is likely due to the fact that she is a fan of Brook and doesn't truly want to hurt him.

Brook's Past And His Connection To Gunko

Brook Was In A Battle Convoy Of A Kingdom

Many fans seem to think that Brook knows Gunko through one of the concerts that he held during the timeskip, but that's not the case. Brook's real past holds the key to the connection between him and Gunko. As was revealed by Brook himself, he was born 90 years ago, and at some point, he received a formal education and then went on to serve in the battle convoy of a certain kingdom. Fans don't know what this kingdom is, but it is clear that Brook held a very important position here.

How Brook Saw Gunko

Given that Brook was in the official army, it isn't a stretch to say that he could've accompanied the King of his country to the Holy Land of Marijoa for a Reverie meeting, long ago. It is there that Brook likely learned of the existence of the Holy Knights, and at the same time, managed to catch a glimpse of Gunko.

Now, fans know that Brook joined the Rumbar Pirates 52 years ago, which means his visit to Marijoa was most likely 54 years ago, when the Reverie was held. 54 years ago, Brook must've met Gunko and to this day, she most likely looks the same. This is basically Oda's way of showing the fans that Gunko is immortal and hasn't aged a day since. At the same time, Brook and Gunko might even have interacted 54 years ago, with Gunko possibly forming some sort of connection with Brook. Oda will most definitely highlight the connection between Brook and Gunko even further in the upcoming chapters of One Piece.

One Piece chapter 1148 will be out soon, in a week's time. As usual, One Piece is going to drop on Sunday. In Japan, One Piece drops at 12AM JST on Monday. However, the vast majority of international readers will see the chapter available on May 11. The official release date of One Piece Chapter 1148 is May 11, 2025.
