With their appearance being so similar, fans automatically assumed that Garling had red hair. However, this was a big mistake.

One Piece chapter 1096 actually confirmed Garling Figarland to be blond. Still, it was hard for one to take it for confirmation until the actual colors were revealed. One Piece Episode 1129, which dropped recently, finally gave the readers a confirmation on that end, and now, it is quite clear that Garling Figarland Is, indeed, blind and that Shanks doesn't inherit his hair from him at all. This is very interesting and fans know that it'll carry huge significance in the plot moving forward as it all points towards Shanks's mother.

While Garling Figarland is known to be Celestial Dragon royalty, fans can't say that Shanks and Shamrock's mother was the same. One thing that points to the true lineage of their mother, however, is the fact that Shamrock Figarland isn't known as a Saint, unlike his father. In other words, he might not be a pure-blooded Celestial Dragon, which means that their mother could've been a commoner, or a slave. Shanks doesn't inherit the royalty of his father, neither did he inherit his hair. Shanks instead inherited the hair of his mother, which is very important. One needs to keep in mind that Shanks is widely known as “red hair.” More than that, Shanks also named his crew the Red Hair Pirates. In other words, the only defining thing that Shanks Inherited from his mother was something that he attached huge importance to. Shanks must be aware of his mother's secrets, and she might actually be dead already. But, her legacy likely lives through Shanks himself, which is why he honors her by taking the moniker Red Hair, or by naming his crew Red Hair Pirates. Based on how everything is set up, it wouldn't be surprising if Shanks's mother was a D, and he is the child of a Celestial Dragon and a D.
