This article contains spoilers from One Piece's Final Saga.
Monkey D. Luffy is the protagonist of One Piece, and also one of the strongest characters in the series now, given that he's one of the Yonko. Luffy wasn't always as strong as he is, but during the events of the Wano Country arc, he gained tremendous power, all thanks to the awakening of his Devil Fruit, which he calls Gear 5.
One Piece: Oda Confirms Luffy's Next Power Up After Devil Fruit Awakening
Luffy's Gear 5 is powerful, but he will get an even bigger power-up soon in One Piece, and it has nothing to do with his Devil Fruit.
Luffy's Gear 5 turns him into the Warrior of Liberation and grants him a transformation that is incredibly difficult to beat, especially since his imagination is the only thing restricting him. However, Luffy's Devil Fruit is certainly not the strongest in One Piece, and naturally, his Devil Fruit awakening, although quite strong, isn't the strongest either. Oda has already set up a mighty Devil Fruit awakening that can trump any fruit in One Piece, and it also belongs to one of the Four Emperors of the Sea, Blackbeard.
Devil Fruit Awakenings Are More Important Than Ever In One Piece
- Devil Fruit Awakenings Are Key In The Final Saga
- Oda Will Give The Strongest Awakening to Luffy's Enemies
In the Final Saga of One Piece, Devil Fruit awakenings are going to be incredibly important, and that goes without saying. These awakenings allow a user to push the Devil Fruit beyond all limits, and attain new powers, some that don't even fit the criteria of the fruit. Luffy has already awakened his Devil Fruit, attaining a brand-new transformation, which he calls Gear 5. Naturally, any big enemy that he faces in the Final Saga of One Piece should also have access to this power to level the playing field.
Awakening is what we call when the body finally catches up with the ability. — Kaido
In fact, Rob Lucci, whom Luffy faced in Egghead, had an awakened Devil Fruit. The Gorosei, whom he fought there, also had an awakening, and while Kizaru didn't, their battle was very brief and more of a battle of attrition. In Elbaf, Luffy will fight Imu, so expecting a Devil Fruit awakening there is only natural. All that said, the strongest Devil Fruit awakening in One Piece will belong to none other than Blackbeard, thanks to his Yami Yami no Mi.
Blackbeard's Yami Yami no Mi Awakening Is Far Superior To Luffy's Gear 5
Blackbeard Can Shut Down All Devil Fruit Powers
Blackbeard is one of the most dangerous pirates on the seas of the One Piece world, and his powers are terrifying already, even without awakening. His Gura Gura no Mi can destroy the world with powerful quakes, but that's not all. He also has the Yami Yami no Mi, which allows him to nullify the Devil Fruit abilities of all others.
With these two powers, I'm officially invincible! — Blackbeard
However, a key step to nullifying Devil Fruit abilities for Blackbeard is to make physical contact with his targets. He uses Kurouzu to pull them close and, upon contact, they lose the power to use their fruit. This is overpowered enough already, but Devil Fruit awakening can take it to a whole new level.
One Piece: Oda Reveals A New Haki User As Strong As Shanks
Shanks is a powerful haki user, but Oda reveals someone just on his level in One Piece.
Simply put, if awakened, Blackbeard can essentially cancel Devil Fruit powers without direct contact when he uses the Yami Yami no Mi. He would be able to spread his ability to the surroundings, meaning anyone standing on the ground making physical contact with his awakened ability will have their fruits nullified.
Luffy Will Struggle Vs Blackbeard
Luffy relies heavily on Gear 5, and without it, he cannot fight Yonko-level enemies. But, against Blackbeard, it will be nearly impossible for Luffy to use Gear 5, which is why it is a guarantee that he will struggle against him. Luffy's Gear 5 is truly a mighty awakening, but Blackbeard’s Yami Yami no Mi, once awakened, will take him to a different level.
