Shanks's past has always been mysterious in One Piece, but Oda is most certainly shedding light on it slowly. In the Elbaf arc, a lot of details about Shanks and his life have been made known, and the most shocking of all is the revelation that Shanks was actually a part of the Celestial Dragons at one point. In fact, Oda has highlighted his connection to Imu already, and it is clear to see that Shanks hides some big secrets.

Fans know very little about the life of Red-haired Shanks. However, over the Final Saga, Oda had finally started revealing bits and pieces of information. For one, in the Elbaf arc, Oda decided to drop some absolutely staggering information about the red-haired Emperor of the Sea. Oda finally confirmed to the fans that Shanks was, indeed, born a Celestial Dragon.

This is something that a lot of the fans knew already. However, getting the confirmation from the author was important. Secondly, when Shamrock Figarland came to Elbaf, he made it quite clear that Shanks is his younger brother, meaning that Shanks is also a part of the Figarland Family. His father is Garling Figarland, and Shanks comes from one of the most exalted lines of Celestial Dragons.
Oda has made it clear through Shamrock that Shanks returned to the Holy Land of Marijoa at one point. However, he chose to abandon that life and has been a pirate ever since.

In One Piece chapter 1152, Oda gave the fans a short flashback of Loki and Gaban. In the flashback, it was clear for the fans to see Shanks taking a bath with Gaban 14 years ago. On his left arm, the mark of the World Government was quite clear to see. This mark is also present on other Holy Knights, which means that Shanks could've been connected to the Holy Knights too.

One Piece is filled with great flashbacks - and the next one may be the best yet.
As such, Shanks should've been able to pass through the Abyss, and possibly also gained unique powers, such as his saber Gryphon. It is during this time that Shanks likely met Imu, and fans should fully go on believing that Shanks is well aware of the deepest secrets of the World Government.
Why Shanks Left The World Government
Shanks left the World Government because that was always his goal. Shanks didn't go to Marijoa because he wanted to live life as a Celestial Dragon. He was told something important by Roger before the crew was disbanded, and this is one of the many reasons why Shanks went to the Holy Land. It is highly likely that he was after the Gomu Gomu no Mi, because he was asked to guard the fruit and facilitate the return of Nika. Once the job was done, Shanks likely left the World Government.
