The Holy Knights have certainly been one of the highlights of One Piece’s final saga, especially in the Elbaf arc.
The Elbaf arc introduced quite a few Holy Knights, with Shamrock and Gunko being the first to make their entrance. Later on, Sommers and Killingham joined as Shamrock was needed back in Marijoa.
The Holy Knights quickly stood out, thanks to their staggering persona, and more importantly, their close bond with Imu. Even their abilities were stunning, as they showcased infinite regeneration and immortality.
Along with Shamrock, out of the Holy Knights, one stood out far more than the others, and that was Gunko. Gunko was always set up to be important, but not many fans expected her to become the vessel of Saint Imu and wreak havoc on Elbaf.
Much remains unknown about Gunko, but Oda has already hinted at her backstory, with some of it involving Brook.
While all that was revealed a while ago, the latest One Piece volume has made a shocking revelation about Gunko.

The newest One Piece volume, One Piece volume 112, has made a huge correction concerning the character of Gunko. When Gunko first appeared in the weekly chapter release, she was only referred to as Gunko, with Oda choosing to leave her family name behind. This made her stand out as other Holy Knights were also referred to by their family names. This led to many theories pertaining to her origins.
However, the volume finally reveals Gunko’s family name, and it is Manmayer. Manmayer is one of the twenty Celestial Dragon families. Gunko isn’t the first Manmayer character either, as another Holy Knight woman in God Valley shared this family name as well.

This raises more questions than answers, however, as it complicates Gunko’s backstory and makes fans wonder if she was always a Celestial Dragon or if she was granted that title, something that is very much possible.
Sadly for now, not much more will be revealed about this intriguing character as the Elbaf story has cut away from the events in the current timeline and has instead turned its focus to King Harald and his adventures before his death.
