Without Devil Fruits, the world of One Piece would never be the same. These edible, juicy-looking mystical fruits bring more wonder and unpredictability to One Piece, and it seems like series creator Eiichiro Oda loves creating them. There are more than a hundred of them, and there’s no stopping Oda from adding more unique and broken devil fruits to the ever-expanding world of One Piece.

Devil Fruits basically grant a character extraordinary abilities once consumed. From the silliest abilities, like the Jake Jake No Mi, which grants Kelly Funk the power to transform into a jacket, to the most broken devil fruits, like Sugar’s Hobi Hobi No Mi, Eiichiro Oda has shown that no idea is too outrageous for his manga. However, before a devil fruit is created, Oda must follow one special rule.

  • The exact number of Devil Fruits in One Piece is not yet confirmed.
  • Eiichiro Oda is going to introduce more unique Devil Fruits.

How many devil fruits are there in One Piece? Many fans have been trying to count the devil fruits ever since they were introduced in the first chapter, but Eiichiro Oda has never given the exact number to this day. What fans do know, however, is that the creator of One Piece has designed over a hundred devil fruits that expand the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of One Piece.

It's safe to assume that the number of devil fruits will only go up as the story unfolds. Eiichiro Oda is not yet done surprising fans with the most bizarre devil fruit abilities, even after the Final Saga has started. Each of them has a unique inherited ability that could be a game-changer on the battlefield. A few of them could even change the world, if the user so desires.

There are still many secrets hidden in these fruits, from their true creator and mysterious origins to their true nature and the reason why every user can’t swim in the water. It’s strange how the ocean rejects a devil fruit user, but fans know that Eiichiro Oda will reveal more solid information about them as more chapters are released. There are a lot of theories about devil fruits out there, and maybe some of them will eventually prove to be true.

Eiichiro Oda Explains How He Came Up with Devil Fruits

Devil Fruits Must Fulfill a Human Desire

Among the characters in One Piece, Dr. Vegapunk has researched devil fruits more extensively than anyone else. Not only did he succeed in creating artificial versions of these devil fruits, but he also speculated that devil fruits were manifestations of human desire.

He's an odd man, but true to his desires, and trustworthy.—Dragon on Vegapunk

That might prove to be true, as Eiichiro Oda himself has spoken about his creative process behind the devil fruits in an interview he did with Shounen Jump back in 2009. When asked how he came up with a Devil Fruit, Eiichiro Oda revealed that he always tries to think of a Devil Fruit that “fulfills a human desire.” This gives weight to Dr. Vegapunk’s in-universe theory.

Even the strangest devil fruits, like Tsuru’s Woshu Woshu No Mi, which allows the user to wash and dry people as if they were laundry, and Emporio Ivankov’s Horu Horu No Mi, which allows the user to produce and control hormones, still connect to Eiichiro Oda’s idea of a human desire brought to life. They may look like random gimmicks on the surface, but they represent the ambitions and longings of the characters that people in real life could actually relate to.

Devil Fruits Must Also Be Tempting

Oda Refuses to Draw Dull-Looking Devil Fruits

Devil Fruits are one of the most delectable treats in the world of One Piece and in all of anime. It's not just the characters who want to get a bite out of them, but also the fans who have been watching and reading Luffy’s journey from day one. The swirling pattern carved on the skin of the fruit, its eye-catching colors, and its exotic shapes make it look almost too good to resist.

Eiichiro Oda purposely drew the devil fruits to look irresistible and tempting, though they universally taste disgusting in One Piece. For Oda, drawing a boring devil fruit isn’t worth it. He believes each one should be designed to look so enticing that any character in One Piece who lays their eyes on it would instantly want to take a bite.
