This article contains spoilers from One Piece's Elbaf Arc.

One Piece is filled with some of the most incredible powers, and in the post-timeskip, Oda has paid special attention to the spiritual ability of Haki. As is quite clear in the story, Haki stems from the spirit of the user, and it's a power that can be used in a plethora of ways. Haki can be used to enhance sensory perception with the Color of Observation, or to boost offense and defense with the Color of Arms. Finally, a special type of Haki that's only within a select few with kingly qualities, called Conqueror's Haki or the Color of the Supreme King, can be used to overwhelm the enemy with willpower.

The concept of Haki was introduced in One Piece properly 15 years ago, and slowly, Oda showed the fans what its true capabilities were. However, in One Piece chapter 1165, Oda went a step beyond and revealed to the fans the true power that lies hidden in Haki. To bring it out, one must understand the core of Haki, and learn to manipulate its mass accordingly. Characters like Roger and Garp, who know how to manipulate the mass of Haki, can truly crush any enemy standing in their paths.

Oda Confirms Haki With Mass Can Overcome All Barriers In One Piece

One Piece chapter 1165 introduced the fans to the concept of Haki with mass. Naturally, this might be confusing to some, as Oda didn't exactly elaborate on what he meant by the mass of Haki. According to what Oda revealed in the chapter, the key to beating the strongest of enemies lies in the mass of Haki. As it is, different Haki types can do different things.

It's all about the mass Garp. The mass of our Haki is lacking. — Roger to Garp, One Piece Chapter 1165

For example, Armament Haki counters Devil Fruit abilities. However, Conqueror's Haki can boost the power of offense and defense overwhelmingly. Used normally, however, they can't penetrate the barriers of those who also use these Haki types.

In One Piece chapter 1165, Roger and Garp used their Armament and Conqueror's Haki against Rocks D. Xebec, yet failed to do any damage to him at the beginning. However, Roger then explained the key to beating Rocks: the mass of Haki. To beat Rocks, Roger and Garp needed to increase the mass of their Haki so they could overcome his powers. In other words, it simply required them to go all out with their strongest Haki, using every ounce of it.

Conqueror's Haki With Mass Can Bypass Immortality

When Scopper Gaban met Luffy again in the Underworld of Elbaf, he told Luffy to bear in mind how he wields his Conqueror's Haki, because only then can he counter the Immortality of the Holy Knights. At the time, it wasn't exactly clear what Gaban meant. Now, it's quite clear that he meant Luffy needs to learn to control the mass of Haki.

Listen, Straw Hat Luffy! Bear in mind how you use your Conqueror's Haki. These guys are not immortal! — Scopper Gaban to Luffy

One Piece Oda Reveals Elbaf's Main Villain is Loki Not Imu
1 Year Later, One Piece Author Oda Reveals Elbaf’s Main Villain, And It's Not Imu

Imu won't be Elbaf's main villain. The real enemy will shock fans in One Piece.

The Holy Knights all use powers bestowed by Imu and to overcome that, Luffy needs to increase the mass of Haki that he's using with each attack. If attacked with normal amounts of Haki, the damage will not go through and they'll regenerate. In order to do lasting damage, the mass of Haki needs to be increased, which will then lead to stronger and lasting damage, leading to Immortality being officially countered.

Strong Barriers Can Be Created With Full Power Haki

Oda also revealed another unique power of Conqueror's Haki in One Piece, and that's creating a physical barrier. While Big Mom used this power in the Wano arc, Xebec used it at a higher level against Rocks and Roger. By wearing the Supreme King Haki around himself, one can essentially negate all incoming damage, as long as their Haki level is quite high. Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, and the others must learn this power to truly defend against strong enemies of the World Government.

Eiichiro Oda's One Piece will be on break next week. One Piece Chapter 1166 will be out in two weeks. The official release date of One Piece Chapter 1166 is November 23, 2025. Fans can read the chapter for free on Manga Plus.
