Summary

- Luffy may not face Big Mom despite his promise to defeat her after Kaido, but his new Gear 5 will make easy work of her.
- Luffy's weakness lies in slash attacks, but his potential with the Hito Hito No Mi Model Nika could allow him to defeat formidable opponents like Kozuki Oden and Monkey D. Garp.
With One Piece's Wano Country arc now over in both the manga and anime, most fans will now be aware of just how formidable Luffy has become. After his long-lasting duel with Kaido and his awakening with Gear 5, it is safe to say that Luffy stands among the series' strongest characters in both the old and new generations. Defeating Kaido is a feat that nobody in the world of One Piece has accomplished except Luffy, at least according to what has been said in the story so far.
One Piece: 5 Plot Lines That May Trigger The Final War
As the adventurous story comes closer to its end, multiple factors may contribute to its final epic war.
As the story has progressed towards its final saga, there is no doubt that Luffy is capable of beating the best of the best. Standing as the future Pirate King requires not only a great level of will, but also great battle capabilities, and Eiichiro Oda has showcased that with the story's main character.
1 Big Mom
Luffy May Not Face Big Mom Despite His Promise Of Defeating Her
Before Luffy put an end to Kaido's reign over Wano, Big Mom was also defeated at the hands of Kid and Law, presumably dead alongside Kaido. While Luffy promised to beat Big Mom after he was done with Kaido, that opportunity seems to be gone, for now. In both the old generation of pirates and the new, Big Mom is known to be a ferocious character, with enough strength to be a contender to rival some of the strongest characters.
Even before attaining Gear 5, Luffy was giving Kaido a run for his money by coating his attacks with Conqueror's Haki. This, alone against Big Mom, is capable of resulting in her defeat with difficulty for Luffy, but the inclusion of Gear 5 will put matters to bed quickly.
2 Sengoku
Luffy Utilized Gear Third To Protect Ace From Sengoku
Besides the Marineford arc and brief moments showcasing him in action alongside Garp against Shiki, there has not been much to lean off of in terms of Sengoku's strength. Possessing a similar Mythical Zoan devil fruit to Luffy's known as the Hito Hito No Mi Model Daibutsu, there is no doubt that Sengoku was a formidable foe, especially fighting alongside the "Hero of the Marines."
One Piece: All Members Of The Worst Generation, Ranked By Strength
The Worst Generation contains some of the most fearsome pirates in the world of One Piece, but which among them is the most powerful?
When it comes down to battle with the Hito Hito No Mi Model Nika and Luffy's base form alone, there is plenty to watch out for. With the capabilities of this devil fruit, there is a great level of potential that lies within Luffy that Oda has yet to fully explore, and this will likely be enough to best Sengoku.
3 Kozuki Oden
Luffy's Weakness Lies In The Use Of Slash Attacks
It is important to remember that Oden is one of the few characters that fans have seen come close to defeating Kaido in the story so far. Besides his incredibly impressive swordsmanship skills, his physical prowess alone is something to behold, which has also been shown in his son Momonosuke once fully grown.
While Luffy maintains a weakness when it comes to slashing attacks that would put him at a disadvantage against swordsmen, it does not mean that Luffy is incapable of defeating some of the strongest out there, one of them being Wano's Kozuki Oden.
4 Old Monkey D. Garp
Garp Was Considered The Strongest Marine In The Old Generation Rivalling Roger
Luffy's grandfather Monkey D. Garp stood as a rival to the former Pirate King Gol D. Roger, who is viewed as the strongest character in the story. To battle with a character of such prowess, with the pair almost killing one another on various occasions, is a huge feat, showing that Garp, in his prime, is certainly among the strongest ever.
Since Garp is now much older and less powerful as opposed to his former younger self, a bout with his grandson would be a fascinating watch, to say the least. While it would be difficult for Luffy to defeat him, the inclusion of Gear 5 once again would ultimately be the factor that would result in his victory over Garp.
5 Old Whitebeard
Blackbeard Stole The Gura Gura No Mi Upon Killing Whitebeard
Known as the direct rival to Gol D. Roger, competing with one another to become Pirate King, Whitebeard is considered to be on the same tier as Roger in his prime. This was also showcased when first meeting Kozuki Oden, whom he managed to best when putting his strength to the test.
When it comes to the older version of Whitebeard at Marineford, his physical prowess and abilities were not as prominent as his younger self, just as it is with many of the old-generation characters that are alive. If Gear 5 Luffy were to battle with the older Whitebeard, fans can be certain Luffy would come out victorious, especially since the Hito Hito No Mi Model Nika essentially negates the use of the Gura Gura No Mi.
