Being a swordsman is one of the most notable paths to power in One Piece. Some of the greatest characters in the entire story have owed much of their strength to their unmatched skill with a blade, such as Ryuma, Rocks D. Xebec, and, according to most fans, even the late King of the Pirates, Gol D. Roger. Each of these legends has been known for their exceptional sword skills.

As such, the weapons they use reflect their strength. Meito are essentially named armaments in the world of One Piece that are the strongest and most durable in the series, with Supreme Grades being the best of them all. So far, all of the swords Zoro has used have been below this level, so it's clear that his weapons simply can't match the greatest one in the series, which is used by the World's Strongest Swordsman.

Yoru Is A Supreme Grade Blade And The Strongest Weapon In The Series

The Legendary Weapon of Dracule Mihawk

First Appearance

One Piece, Chapter 49, "Storm"

Story Arc

Baratie

In One Piece, the greatest weapons are used by the strongest characters. These are the Supreme Grade Weapons, famous all around the world for their incredible durability, strength, and the unmatched quality of their craftsmanship, which is said to be the best in the setting by a wide margin. These armaments are so rare that only 12 of them exist within the series, with each of their users being just as legendary.

Although many are speculated to be Supreme Grades, so far, only five have been confirmed to be at this level. These are Ace, the powerful cutlass used by the former Pirate King, Gol D. Roger; Murakumogiri, the massive Naginata used by the world's strongest man, Whitebeard; the Yakuza Kasen, the small Shikomizue sword used by Marine Admiral Fujitora; and the Shodai Kitetsu, the legendary cursed sword theorized to be wielded by St. Nusjuro, one of the Five Elders. The fifth is the strongest of them all; Yoru, the greatsword used by Dracule Mihawk.

As befitting the weapons of this category, Yoru is one of the strongest weapons in the world and may just be the strongest among this class as well due to it belonging to the world's strongest swordsman. During the Marineford War, which was the only real showing of this weapon, Mihawk was able to do some of the most overpowered things ever seen in One Piece, such as cutting an entire mountain-sized glacier in half, all with unnamed attacks. This shows that Mihawk can deal far greater damage when he's actually serious and uses his honed moves.

As for Zoro's swords, none of them are pushovers either. His strongest swords are Enma and Wado Ichimonji, both of which are Great Grade Blades created by the legendary swordsmith; Shimotsuki Kouzaburo. These are incredibly difficult weapons to wield as they demand proficiency with Haki. His third sword is the Sandai Kitetsu, which is a regular named blade but has seen a lot of action over the years, though none are as powerful as Mihawk's Yoru.

Yoru Is Also A Black Blade On Top Of Being A Supreme Grade Weapon

One Of The Only Two In Existence

  • Black Blades are a further level of sword mastery.

As if being a Supreme Grade Sword wasn't enough to make Yoru the greatest weapon in the entire series, it is also a Black Blade. The concept of Black Blades is one of the most interesting in One Piece as it directly relates to not only the skill someone has with their weapon, but also with the overall strength of their Haki when it comes to using it in a battle.

Over time, when a weapon sees a lot of battle and training with a user, their Haki starts to infuse into it, eventually turning it completely black. Through this, the sword is made infinitely stronger than it was otherwise, capable of dishing out incredible Haki-powered attacks without even being infused with Haki by the user. However, this does come with a catch, namely that the sword gets much heavier and increasingly difficult to wield efficiently, and even becomes incredibly destructive.

And to pay my respect to you as a fellow swordsman, I shall end this duel with my Black Sword, the world's strongest sword!

This shows that Yoru is even more exceptional than previously thought, since it is one of the only two confirmed Black Blades in the series, with the other being Shusui; the Black Blade belonging to the greatest swordsman in history, Shimotsuki Ryuma. However, unlike Shusui, Yoru is a Supreme Grade Blade as well, which just takes everything that has previously been believed about this weapon and confirms it. Yoru is the most durable and best-crafted blade in the entire world on account of being the only Supreme Grade Black Blade in existence.

So far, Zoro has nothing that can even compete with this incredible armament. However, many fans believe that Enma is the next in line to become both, since any blade can be made into a Black Blade over enough Haki infusion over time, and a weapon can also have its overall grade increased substantially. While Enma, or any of Zoro's other swords, can undergo such a power-up, they have a long way to go before catching up to Yoru.

One Piece can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
