A lot of questions have been raised with the official reveal of the legendary Rocks D. Xebec in Chapter 1154 of One Piece. This man has lived up to all expectations, as he managed to kill an Admiral as a rookie and even break into the Chamber of Flowers to confront Imu, showing that there is much more to him, and his son Blackbeard, than what fans had been deliberating for years before his debut.

However, one of the biggest mysteries about Rocks came when he mentioned that he was a follower of Davy Jones. Although this figure has been mentioned before, it was never in the vein of being someone important enough to inspire the journeys of the most important villains in all of One Piece. In this article, let's go over the most popular arguments about who the mysterious Davy Jones even was and why he's so important to the world.

Davy Jones Was The Evil Counterpart To Joyboy In The Void Century

The More Likely Option

  • Rocks claimed to be a follower of Davy Jones.

Davy Jones is probably the most well-known figure when it comes to pirate mythology in the real world, so it's only natural for him to also be represented in One Piece, a series whose basic premise deals with pirates. He was first mentioned during the Long Ring Long Land arc, where he was explained to have been a pirate from ancient times who lives on the sea floor and collects all sunken treasure to keep inside his locker.

In Chapter 1155, it is revealed how Rocks managed to form his legendary pirate crew, which was through the ancient pirate custom of Davy Back Fights, which is how pirates can take members of other crews for themselves. Coincidentally, this was said to be created by Davy Jones and could possibly explain who this man was. The most common theory is that, due to the dynamic shared between Luffy and Blackbeard or Roger and Rocks, the same must have been true for Joyboy as well.

This is to say that the most important pirate figure of an age must have someone who acts as a mirror to them as their perfect, evil counterpart. Seeing how Luffy and Roger both had this, it would only make sense for Joyboy to have one as well, with the common theory being that this was Davy Jones. He may have even been a part of Joyboy's crew at one point, but would have betrayed the hero, which could also explain the mystery behind the Will of D. Though it's currently vague, some think that there are two of these wills, one for heroes and one for villains.

This would explain why the 'Rocks D.' Line seems to be the only one from the D. Clan that births villains. The common consensus is that the Will of D. Is directly linked to Joyboy and his crew, which would make sense if one member eventually betrayed the crew and their will was carried down through their descendants, who are Rocks and Blackbeard. However, many think that this villainous role to Joyboy is filled by Imu, so Davy Jones may even have been the rival of the original Nika, though this is unlikely.

A Less Likely Theory

Alternatively, a less likely theory, but a much better one to think about, is that Davy Jones was actually Joyboy. Admittedly, the reasoning behind this isn't as clear-cut as the previous theory, but it could make sense when taking a few things into consideration. Firstly, Chapter 1155 described Rocks as a 'Davy Jonesian' pirate, which a small contingent of fans believe is what the infamous 'D.' Stands for in the first place.

Seeing how the Will of D. Is synonymous with Joyboy, it could mean that it comes from his real name, which is Davy Jones. Over the years, both Joyboy and Davy Jones' names have come under a lot of scrutiny and have been portrayed across the world in a very negative light, so it stands to reason that this was all done deliberately, since the World Government likely did this to keep them both in everyone's ire. While Joyboy's name was lost to the ages, Davy Jones endured, so they probably wanted to control that information as well, which is why he's spoken of very negatively.

The main character of this story was born into a kingdom with an impossibly advanced civilization, 900 years ago... His name was Joyboy. And he was the very first man on this sea to be called a pirate!

Back when Robin first told Chopper about Davy Jones during the Long Ring Long Land arc, she revealed that Davy Jones was cursed by a demon to live on the Sea Floor. Seeing Joyboy's suspected relationship with Imu, it could very likely be that this is indicative of what happened to the legendary pirate, especially when considering Imu's mysterious Devil Fruit powers that give them the visage of a demon.

Moreover, the D. Clan are the sworn enemies of Imu and their reign, which is even evidenced by Imu's reaction to Joyboy's Haki from Egghead. The fact that Rocks went directly to Imu's face and claimed himself to be a Davy Jonesian Pirate, or someone who follows Davy Jones, possibly means something more in the grand scheme of the story. Until then, fans can only wait to see what the truth is.
