Summary

  • Trafalgar Law's Ope Ope no Mi allows him to manipulate space like a surgeon, with abilities like body modification and soul swapping.
  • Law may use the Perennial Youth Operation to grant Luffy immortality at the cost of his own life, ending in a tragic but heroic sacrifice.
  • A darker theory suggests Law may be forced to use the operation on Garling, displaying the potential for a more tragic outcome.

It is no secret that the Straw Hats would not have had any success in their adventures had it not been for the important allies they've made along the way. After all, the characters are perhaps the greatest strength of the One Piece story as the named characters have a unique personality and an intricate backstory that has made them into who they are in this world today.

One such character is Trafalgar D. Law, who was first introduced as one of the most dangerous pirates of the Worst Generation during One Piece's Sabaody Archipelago arc. After that, he became one of the Straw Hat's most important allies in the New World, to the point where many think that he will eventually join the crew in the future. However, this also means that his ending may just be a tragic one. So, let's break down why this is.

To understand the grim fate that possibly awaits Law, one must understand the role his Devil Fruit will play in it. Often called 'The Ultimate Devil Fruit', the Ope Ope no Mi is a Paramecia Type that gives Law the ability to essentially remodel the entire world around him as if he is operating on it like a surgeon, which perfectly goes hand-in-hand with Law's expertise as a doctor.

The ability to do this isn't automatic, however, as Law needs to summon a stationary space around himself and his intended target, inside which anything is possible. By chanting the word 'room', an enclosed space is formed, within which Law can control everything, whether it's an inanimate object, a person, or even himself. By manipulating everything how he sees fit, he is essentially a surgeon, the space itself is the operating table, and anyone or anything else caught inside is essentially the patient.

The things he has been seen doing within this room are taking apart people's bodies without killing them or even spilling a drop of blood, making things levitate similar to telekinesis, swapping the positions of people or things, and, most impressively, even supplanting people's souls into the bodies of others. With the latter ability, the only way of going back to one's own body is if Law does this 'surgery' again.

Though there are far more abilities that this Devil Fruit grants the user, such as energy-based attacks and even control over abstract concepts within the room, the greatest power of the Ope Ope no Mi is called the 'Perennial Youth Operation'. This ability allows the user to grant anyone the power of immortality at the cost of their own life, which is the main reason why it's called the Ultimate Devil Fruit. Doflamingo noted that the Ope Ope no Mi works in tandem with a 'secret treasure of Marijoa' which allows someone with both powers to conquer the world.

Law's Tragic Fate

How Law's Ending Could Be Heartbreaking

Featured One Piece_ Every Character Who Has A Rare Devil Fruit Law Luffy (2) (1)

The reason why the Devil Fruit's greatest ability could mean tragedy for Law is because many feel that he is eventually going to use the Perennial Youth Operation. Law has had quite a character journey as he started off as a rival for Luffy but eventually became perhaps his greatest non-Straw Hat ally, as he helped at some of the most notable moments that happened after the timeskip; namely Dressrosa and Wano.

Due to this, many feel that he will eventually become a member of the Straw Hats after his own crew was just decimated by Blackbeard. In the final war when Luffy finally faces off against Imu and the Gorosei, many believe that the ancient power of Sun God Nika may still not be enough to defeat the greatest threats at the end of the story, namely Blackbeard, the Gorosei, and Imu themselves, the latter of whom has been steadily growing in power for 800 years since the Void Century ended.

You can't see the whole picture until you look at it from the outside.

If this is the case, Luffy will fall against the villain and be at death's door with no chance of survival, at which point Law will step in. Recognizing Luffy as the only hope of saving the world while also bringing Corazon's sacrifice full circle, many believe that Law will use the Perennial Youth Operation on Luffy to give him an incredible power-up at the cost of his own life, which will be an absolutely beautiful end to one of One Piece's best side characters.

However, there is another far darker theory. Many believe that despite Imu bestowing the Gorosei with their powers, which are separate from Devil Fruits, their eternal life is still gifted to them by the continued use of the Ope Ope no Mi through the centuries, which is even seen as how the fruit was on its way to the World Government when it was stolen by Corazon. The theory states that Law will be forced to perform the operation on Figarland Garling, giving him immortality and killing himself in the process. However, the former theory is far better and far more likely.
