Everybody in the anime/community knows that the Devil Fruits from One Piece are some of the most interesting, distinct and bizarre power systems in the entire action shōnen genre. Needless to say, Eiichiro Oda’s original manga was already filled to the brim with many strange Devil Fruits, but Toei Animation’s animated adaptation added even more.
The official One Piece anime has several filler arcs and TV specials that have introduced a bunch of new, non-canon fruits, and they are just as unusual as the ones from the source material. With over sixteen story arcs that span across twenty-one years, there are a lot to choose from, but the following eight anime-exclusive Devil Fruits are the weirdest ones in the entire show so far.
Kama Kama No Mi
Allows Its User To Turn His Nails Into Deadly Blades
- Eaten by: Eric
- Type: Paramecia
- Debut: Episode 56
The Warship Island Arc is notorious for being the very first filler arc in the One Piece anime, and naturally, it also marked the introduction of a few anime-only Devil Fruits, like the Kama Kama no Mi. After consuming it, Eric (the main antagonist of the arc) is able to extend his fingernails and use them to either attack his targets directly or launch wind blades from a distance.
If the concept of sharp nails as weapons wasn’t already odd enough, Eric also said that the wind blades he creates are as lethal as a Meito-grade sword, which is quite a tall claim. Curiously enough, the name of this Devil Fruit led to a recurring joke in which Luffy misheard Eric and believed he was an Okama — like Bon Clay or Ivankov — years before these iconic characters were even introduced.
Ami Ami No Mi
Allows Its User To Turn Everything He Eats Into Nets
- Eaten by: Largo
- Type: Paramecia
- Debut: Episode 427
The Little East Blue Arc introduced viewers to Largo, a deadly pirate captain who was working for Shiki, and his Devil Fruit, the Ami Ami no Mi. It allows him to generate nets from his body, which seems like a mundane Devil Fruit power at first, but it has a catch that makes it stand out even more: the nets have different elemental properties depending on what materials Largo has ingested right before creating them.
While his basic mucus-like nets are both sticky and durable, he can also generate a variety of other bizarre ones in combat. If Largo ingests boiling water, he can create a net of boiling water, if he ingests fire, he can create a fire net, so on and so forth. This one condition makes the Ami Ami no Mi a really distinctive anime-only Devil Fruit and Largo’s fights with Luffy and the Straw Hats ended up being much more interesting as a result.
Kyubu Kyubu No Mi
Allows Its User To Turn Anything He Touches Into Cubes
- Eaten by: Gairam
- Type: Paramecia
- Debut: 3D2Y: Overcome Ace's Death! Luffy's Vow to his Friends
Byrnndi World, the main antagonist of the TV special 3D2Y: Overcome Ace's Death! Luffy's Vow to his Friends has eaten a relatively conventional Devil Fruit, the Moa Moa no Mi. But the same can’t be said about his crew’s shipwright, Gairam, and his own strange Devil Fruit, the Kyubu Kyubu no Mi.
Gairam can turn anything he touches into either one big cube or a bunch of smaller cubes, and control them telepathically. Despite the strange nature of this ability, Gairam has been able to use it quite effectively in combat, especially when he applies it to the environment to create giant mazes that trap and confuse his opponents. On top of all that, he can even turn the surrounding air into a compressed cube and then launch it as a bomb, similarly to Bartholomew Kuma’s Ursus Shock.
Peto Peto No Mi
Allows Its User To Control Any Living Creature
- Eaten by: Breed
- Type: Paramecia
- Debut: Episode 625
Years before Tama’s Kibi Kibi no Mi made its canonical debut during the Wano Country Arc, the anime introduced a much more malicious counterpart during the Caesar Retrieval Arc, and it was called the Peto Peto no Mi. With this power, its user, Breed, is able to create collars out of a green slime-like substance that he can then throw at his target’s necks in order to control their bodies from a distance.
The Peto Peto No Mi is a very cruel Devil Fruit, as its powers allow Breed to take control of both animals (like the Kung-Fu Dugongs or Tony Tony Chopper) and humans (like Monkey D. Luffy or Caesar Clown), not to mention that it can also bring out the full potential of its victims to make them stronger, as it was seen when Breed placed one of his collars on his own neck and turned into a giant hulking monster.
Gutsu Gutsu No Mi
Allows Its User To Turn His Body Into A Blast Furnace
- Eaten by: Bill
- Type: Paramecia
- Debut: Episode 746
Devil Fruits that allow their users to create something after ingesting a specific material are inherently extremely bizarre, because they directly alter said person’s biology. This was seen first with Largo’s Ami Ami no Mi and a second time with the leader of the Silver Pirate Alliance, Bill, and his Devil Fruit, the Gutsu Gutsu no Mi.
After consuming it, he basically turned into a human furnace that can ingest metals and melt them inside his body. With this peculiar but surprisingly versatile ability, Bill can do all sorts of things, like creating weapons, launch burning molten metal, coat his body in silver and even increase his muscle mass to enhance his physical strength.
Koro Koro No Mi
Allows Its User To Transform Into A Living Mine Cart
- Eaten by: Aveyron
- Type: Paramecia
- Debut: Episode 747
Following the mining theme of the Silver Pirate Alliance, one of Bill’s crewmates, Aveyron, once consumed a very strange Devil Fruit that’s known as the Koro Koro no Mi. With it, he can basically turn into a human rail cart, complete with spinning wheels on both his arms and legs.
Aveyron not only uses this ability to travel at high speeds through the rails of the silver mine, but he also carries a large compartment on his back in which he carries other people and objects that he can use as weapons, including cannons and oil drums. Truth be told, while the powers of the Koro Koro no Mi are indeed very strange, they are admittedly quite useful, especially in the underground setting of the Silver Mine Arc.
Iro Iro No Mi
Allows Its User To Camouflage Himself With Spray Paint
- Eaten by: Psycho P.
- Type: Paramecia
- Debut: Heart of Gold
Sometimes it’s easy to forget that, despite its prominent pirate theme, the world of One Piece also has many modern and/or futuristic elements, so seeing someone with spray paint does not really feel out of place. For example: Psycho P. Is a street artist and a member of the Treasure Pirates who appears in the Heart of Gold TV special, and his Devil Fruit, the Iro Iro no Mi, is nothing short of fascinating.
With his powers, Psycho P. Can cover his body with spray paint to activate his camouflage and basically make himself invisible to the naked eye. If that wasn’t impressive enough, he can also use his artistic talent to copy the appearance of other people in order to disguise either himself or his allies, although sometimes these replicas look way too abstract and cartoony to actually fool anyone that isn’t stupid.
Unnamed Red Beast Zoan
Allows Its User To Turn Parts Of His Body Into A Mysterious Red Beast
- Eaten by: All-Hunt Grount
- Type: Zoan
- Debut: Episode 782
All-Hunt Grount, the main antagonist of the Marine Rookie Arc, is definitely one of the most interesting One Piece characters that were exclusively created for the anime. Not only does his appearance and personality make him feel like a typical shōnen anime protagonist, but he also wields the powers of an extremely unusual Zoan-type Devil Fruit that doesn’t even have a name.
If Grount’s metallic brace is broken, and he loses control of his powers, his left arm will turn into the arm of a massive unspecified beast with red fur that possesses huge physical strength and can even create potent shockwaves. This unnamed Devil Fruit is not only strange because it doesn’t seem to be based on any real animal (although it’s always possible that it's based on a fictional creature from the One Piece world), but also because it’s not common for users of Zoan-type fruits to lose control of their transformation as if they were a werewolf. Fortunately, Grount was eventually able to fully master this mysterious power after an intense battle with Luffy.
