Anime fans are passionate about what they love. While that usually manifests in positive ways, there are times when fans go too far. Season 3 of One-Punch Man has been a roller coaster so far. While there are elements of the new season that fans like, most have been very critical of it.
With the second season earning ire from fans due to issues with animation and pacing, season 3 director Shinpei Nagai was facing an uphill battle. The director has done his best to interact with fans via social media, but it seems like high expectations and lingering frustrations over J.C.Staff’s handling of season two have led to a boiling point culminating in the director leaving social media.
One-Punch Man Season 3 Discourse Has Become Messy
Whenever a new season is released for a series as popular as One-Punch Man, there’s bound to be plenty of discussion about it online. It’s perfectly fair for fans to debate what they like and don’t like about the season and share whatever criticisms they have. But there have been points where the discussion surrounding OPM season 3 has become vitriolic.
Season 1 of the anime set the bar really high, and most fans will look at that as the gold standard for any future adaptations. The move from Madhouse to J.C.Staff brought on not only a change in style, but in quality as well. Season 2 was widely panned for issues with animation that season 3 is still suffering from. It’s fair for fans to be upset with the inconsistent quality of the anime, but Nagai has become a lightning rod for criticism, with many disregarding the hard work he and other J.C.Staff staff members have put in to making season 3 as good as it can be.
“This is troubling. Let’s all stop arguing with each other. Let’s talk about something fun instead.”
The saddest part of this whole situation is the negative toll this has taken on Nagai. The director made what seems to be an earnest effort early on to interact with fans and get people excited for the new season. Plenty of fans have shown their support for him online, but it looks like a select few have spoiled what should be the biggest moment of his career.
For fans keeping up with the new season, it’s important to remember that there’s still plenty more to go. Reacting to individual episodes on a week-to-week basis is part of the seasonal anime experience, but the final product isn’t out yet. Things might improve, and by the end of it all, even Nagai’s biggest detractors might be singing a different tune.
