Open-world games are pure joy, allowing players to immerse themselves in thrilling and expansive worlds, unlike the one they live in. Players can enter new worlds, inhabit new lives, and tackle a cast of characters through exciting stories and combat, but there’s one thing that players can never agree on, and that’s the raging debate of console vs PC. Yet, some open-world games are simply better to play with a keyboard and mouse.

7 Fun Open-World Games Where You Are Overpowered

Open-world games are common nowadays, but the nature of nonlinear storytelling often means players can become far too powerful.

The reason that some games benefit from a keyboard and mouse comes from the freedom of movement with a mouse compared to an analog stick. Keyboards also have near endless amounts of buttons, whereas consoles are restricted to four and a d-pad. Open-world games often require a lot of focus and commitment, so being able to freely navigate these worlds with a keyboard and mouse, for smooth movement and item swapping, makes for a better experience.

Cyberpunk 2077 will take players to Night City, a futuristic crime-riddled dystopia, where crime and corruption are rampant conquerors. Players can find plenty of joy in Night City, even if the protagonist, V, has the clock ticking on life thanks to the relic in their head, a constant reminder thanks to the narcissistic rockerboy terrorist, Johnny Silverhand, who constantly chimes in.

Whilst Cyberpunk 2077 can be enjoyed with a controller in hand, the first-person shooting mechanics complement a keyboard and mouse. It helps to be able to press the numbers on a keyboard to enter dialogue options, especially when there are near endless possibilities within conversation and consequence. The shooting and driving feel great in first-person, so the smoothness of a keyboard and mouse elevates the gameplay.

Whilst Fallout 4 may not have the best story out of all Fallout games, it certainly excels in terms of combat. Embarking into the wasteland as the Sole Survivor of Vault 111, players will be on a quest to find and save their newborn son, Shaun, and avenge their spouse. Their journey will take them through some iconic Boston locations, as well as some familiar enemies, like super mutants, deathclaws, and new additions, like synths, which plague Boston like the boogeyman.

An absolute classic with near-endless possibilities, starting a new world in Minecraft never gets old. Whether players enjoy mining, building, or fighting, Minecraft on a keyboard and mouse is the definitive way to play the game. After all, it started on PC and remains the king of the platforms for Minecraft, and for a few reasons.

Minecraft has a lot of features, and players can use the mouse’s scroll function to go through their inventory bar easily. They can also easily right-click to place blocks in crafting menus, rather than with a controller, where they will have a lot less freedom when it comes to how they move and the items that they can control.

Take on the vastness of the ocean in Subnautica, where players will be tasked with exploring the depths below, and all the beauty, dangers, and wonders that give it such mystique. Subnautica is a thrilling adventure into an underwater world, where players will lose themselves within the immersion of the deep below through the wonders and perils that they can find.

A keyboard and mouse truly complement the first-person perspective, and players will have a far more responsive time looking around for strange creatures and out-smarting them, with a mouse rather than a controller. The crafting elements are also made more accessible thanks to a keyboard and mouse.

In an infinite procedurally generated universe, players can embark on unique adventures to seek out new life and planets, and maybe even stumble upon strange new threats and materials. No Man’s Sky has evolved and continues to do so, with players able to create and craft, as well as commit to combat and co-op.

It’s best to try No Man’s Sky out in first-person, as seeing all the creatures up close and using the scanner function with a simple click of a button on a keyboard, makes things all the easier and responsive. There’s a lot to learn and discover in No Man’s Sky, so having a button for everything certainly helps.

Hunt: Showdown is a great addition to the PvPvE genre, with thrilling stakes between life and death with reward. Players will need to hunt for bounties across a sprawling bayou, infested with monsters and monstrous players alike. Competing hunters and traps will seek to sabotage the player, either alone or in a group, which is why a keyboard and mouse seem near essential for Hunt: Showdown.

Keyboard and mouse users have a competitive edge over other players thanks to the responsive nature of a mouse, so joining the competition will make the game better, as players can aim more precisely and faster rather than juggling two analog sticks. The reliance on items and other kit essentials also benefits players on a keyboard, as a quick button press from the many keys will aid them with more than one of the four buttons on a controller.
