In this brutal open world that can be played alone or with friends (or against other players in a PvP server), players have to mind some of the most brutal survival mechanics in open-world games. Players not only have to manage their hunger and thirst, but also constantly battle against raiders, hostile wildlife, and dangerous monsters that roam near every corner of the Exile Lands.

To add an extra layer of difficulty, the most dangerous places (and also the ones that have better loot) are protected by powerful curses and ancient dark creatures that can wipe out unprepared players. The extreme weather conditions and the presence of ancestral Gods that need to be worshiped add even more tension to the gameplay, more so if a rival team raids your base using a God's Avatar.

In this open-world survival game, players will have to deal with many tense situations, like being chased by zombies, wild animals, and worse: other players, which are the most dangerous threats they will find inside this post-apocalyptic setting. This creates a sensation of being hunted the whole time, which is extremely stressful even for the most hardcore gamers.

Open-world games give developers a great opportunity to build an immersive world for players to explore, and these games do it best.

To add even more tension to the mix, the permadeath mechanic of the game makes dying unusually punishing for players. The average life-time of a new player doesn't exceed 30 minutes of gameplay, whereas veterans can survive up to double that time if they are lucky.

Green Hell's huge open-world map is filled to the brim with tense survival experiences that will make even the most prepared players twitch with frustration. From the dangerous fauna to the dangerous natives of the Amazon jungle: everything can kill the players. A small scratch on the player's arms might turn into an infection, and the fever will drive them mad before they die.

The game puts players in the boots of Jake Higgins who is desperately looking for his missing wife, Mia. But to find her, he will need to search far and wide, avoid the dangerous piranha-filled waters of the Amazon River, the poisonous frogs, snakes, and spiders. On the other hand, they have to manage their hunger while also minding their diet of carbohydrates, fat, and protein, as well as their hydration. All of these factors turn Green Hell into one of the most tense survival experiences.

From the moment players descend from the plane in The Forest, they're exposed to constant surveillance by the less-than-friendly inhabitants of the island. This creates a hard-to-imitate tension mechanic that plays with the minds of gamers in a way that is hard to replicate.

Every Monster Hunter Game, Ranked

The Monster Hunter series has seen a lot of entries over the years, and they have varied greatly in reception and quality.

The fear of those screaming monsters climbing the trees and launching surprise attacks on the players' camps is the real deal. Few open-world games dared to use such a mixture of environmental horror and body horror to create its main antagonists. That's one of the things that makes The Forest and its successor so special.

From the incredibly hard-to-deal-with Poltergeists, to the massive Pseudogiants, STALKER 2 has an array of dangerous creatures that make sure that the players stay vigilant all the time. But the game also has enemies such as bandits and deranged fanatics always looking for an easy target, making players always look over their shoulders right after looting a house.

So, STALKER 2 is one of the perfect examples of an open-world game with tense survival mechanics that make it unique. Trying this game means having to detect not only radiation zones, but anomalies popping up out of nowhere that can shred players into pieces in a matter of seconds.

Players roaming the Östertörn archipelago in Generation Zero will soon notice two things: there's not a living soul nearby to help them go through this ordeal, and the machines that have taken over their hometown are viciously evolving as they fight them.

This particular element added to the usual combat mechanics makes this game one of the most eerie and difficult survival experiences for those who enjoy open-world survival titles. The feeling of defeat when players see a swarm of bots popping up after dealing with a particular annoying robot, or the way the enemies regroup to chase them when exploring certain critical areas adds to an already tense experience.

Many players experience Thalassophobia for the first time when playing an open-world survival game that has underwater enemies. The fear of something lurking below the surface, ready to gobble whatever dares to enter the waters is something every human carries within: it's part of our preservation instinct.

Stranded Deep takes advantage of this horrifying sensation to deliver a truly powerful experience, where players will most likely feel respect for the vastness of the ocean. More so when surrounded by a swarm of sharks, circling around their raft.
