There has been no update on when the next James Bond movie will be. However, there was a seven-minute tribute to the franchise at the recently concluded Oscars 2025, but not everyone was impressed.

The Substance star Margaret Qualley did the opening tribute with a captivating dance routine set to the James Bond theme. Then Blackpink's Lisa, Doja Cat and Raye took over the stage to perform some of the franchise's iconic songs. Lisa delivered a dynamic rendition of Live and Let Die, Doja Cat made a sultry performance when she sang Diamonds Are Forever, and Raye concluded the tribute with a soulful rendition of Skyfall, the Oscar-winning theme from the 2012 Bond film starring Daniel Craig. While the James Bond tribute was entertaining, many were not pleased because they didn't think it made sense.

Several online users shared their thoughts about the James Bond tribute on social media. While they found the performances entertaining, they were confused about why it was given such a lengthy screen time, when no new James Bond film was in the pipeline. "This James Bond montage and performance is cool and all, but it has no relevance to…anything about the last year in movies. To have a whole section of the show for this, but not let the Best Original Song nominees perform is disrespectful," one wrote on X, formerly Twitter. Another added, "None of this Bond stuff makes any sense at ALL unless they're announcing the new Bond. We cut songs to save time!! Not to give them to Bond!" Another user criticized the Oscars, calling it "a joke" and accusing Amazon, who just brought the franchise of "trying to fatten it up."

Meanwhile, several also felt that the time spent on the James Bond tribute was a waste and should have been given to the late filmmaker David Lynch, who deserved a longer screen time. "Should have done more for David Lynch," one commented. Another said, "[M]akes me sad seeing James Bond get this 10-minute segment, but then David Lynch gets a 10-second in memoriam[sic] clip like...that dude forever changed the f—in entertainment world bro. [H]e deserved a lot more than that." Several others shared the same distaste after watching the lengthy performances. Another criticized the "long and oddly" tribute, preferring to hear a casting or movie announcement instead that promised Amazon was going big with the franchise.

The James Bond tribute at the Oscars 2025 came as a surprise because no significant event called for it. Amazon taking over the franchise isn't enough to give James Bond the Oscars stage, especially since there are no major updates about the next film. Austrian businessman Josef Kleindienst even challenged the franchise's trademark ownership because it's been nearly five years since the last James Bond movie, No Time To Die, was released, and they feared that the franchise was dying because there has been no development after that. "James Bond will not die on our watch," he said. I agree that the performances dedicated to James Bond made no sense at all, and yes, the tribute to David Lynch should have been longer.
