Towards the beginning of your time in The Outer Worlds 2, you'll be advised that you can open a High Security Lockbox from the machine in your ship. The problem is that this first one is pretty much a freebie, and you're also not explicitly told where to go and how you can open these lockboxes. In this guide, I'll explain everything you need to know about how to open High Security Lockboxes in The Outer Worlds 2, so you can get the useful content waiting for you inside.
‘I Personally Want The Player to Understand Their Choices Are Permanent’: The Outer Worlds 2 Dev on Why Staple RPG Feature is Missing
The Outer Worlds 2's game director reveals why a staple RPG feature is missing from Obsidian's upcoming title.
How to Open High Security Lockboxes in The Outer Worlds 2
High Security Lockboxes are opened with Advanced Decryption Keys, which can often be found around the game world and bought from vendors. They're a fairly rare item, so you'll need to look in locked containers and explore the nooks and crannies of locations you find yourself in to get your hands on them.
As mentioned, you can also buy them from vending machines and vendors for 1,000 Credits, but they'll only have a finite amount to sell. As such, if you want to open all High Security Lockboxes in the game, you're going to need to do some exploring as well as spending.
If you accept the 'Consumerism' flaw, you'll be able to purchase Advanced Decryption Keys at a 15% discount.
Once you've got your Advanced Decryption Keys, you'll want to return to your ship. In the corridor entrance that leads into the main area, you'll find a machine on the right-hand wall (as you're entering the main part of your ship). If you've yet to interact with it, you'll need to unjam the machine by interacting with it. After this, you can then use Advanced Decryption Keys to open a High Security Lockbox. Not every lockbox requires the same number of Advanced Decryption Keys to unlock. Some may require four, while others could take eight to open up.
It's worth noting that there are only a set few lockboxes to open on your ship initially. If you want to get more rare goodies, you'll need to find more lockboxes.
Where to Get More High Security Lockboxes
Much like the Advanced Decryption Keys that open them, you'll need to make sure you're thoroughly exploring and looting buildings, chests, caves, and other locations as you make your way through The Outer Worlds 2. I typically found that High Security Lockboxes were tucked away in locked rooms or areas in buildings, or hidden nooks that could easily be missed. As such, make sure you're checking any racking, desks, and lockers in buildings. From my experience in The Outer Worlds 2, you can't buy High Security Lockboxes from vendors or vending machines. You'll want to get and unlock as many of them as possible to give yourself some of the best weapons and items in the game to make combat a breeze.
