The Outer Worlds 2 will cost $79.99 at launch, but those with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription can play through it in its entirety without paying anything beyond what they already pay for their subscription fee. Nintendo's decision to price Mario Kart World at $80 has given the green light for other publishers to start doing the same. While most are playing it safe for now, there are those that have decided to test the $80 waters, Outer Worlds 2 among them.

The Outer Worlds 2 $80 price tag has not exactly gone over well, with some claiming that the franchise isn't established enough to justify such a high price and others worried that this will be the start of a slippery slope for all major Xbox games to cost that much. It's too early to say what will happen on that front, but the good news is that it will still be possible to play Outer Worlds 2 at launch without actually paying $80.

Every Video Game Confirmed and Expected to Be $80 So Far

Gamers are bracing for a wave of games released at $80 and while there aren't many on the market at the moment, more are sure to be on the way.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate costs $19.99 per month, and just one month's subscription will likely be enough for most gamers to get through The Outer Worlds 2. Even if they have to pay for three months of the subscription, it will still be cheaper than buying the game outright at $80. And of course, The Outer Worlds 2 is just one game available to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers at launch. There are all kinds of day one Xbox Game Pass Ultimate games added to the service on a regular basis, ensuring subscribers constantly have something new to play. For anyone that buys a lot of games in any given year, Game Pass practically pays for itself.

Outer Worlds 2 Will Be a Day One Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Game

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is a good solution for those on PC and Xbox Series X that don't want to pay $80 for The Outer Worlds 2, but those on PS5 may be feeling left out. Unfortunately, Game Pass Ultimate is not available for PS5, and so anyone wanting to play Outer Worlds 2 at launch on that platform should plan on spending the $80. That being said, it shouldn't take too long for the game to go on sale. Obsidian's previous game, Avowed, went on sale within two months of its launch, and Outer Worlds 2 is releasing right before the big Black Friday shopping season. It's entirely possible that the game will get a price cut mere weeks after its launch, though that remains to be seen.

There is a rumor that Xbox Game Pass could be getting a price increase soon. Even if that happens, it should still be cheaper than buying Outer Worlds 2 at full price.

Regardless, Outer Worlds 2 looks bigger and better than its predecessor, and for fans of first-person action-RPGs, it could very well be worth the $80 investment. Outer Worlds 2 is being positioned as Xbox's flagship game this holiday season, so there is clearly a great deal of confidence in it, but consumers will have to decide for themselves if it's worth $80, a Game Pass Ultimate subscription, or waiting for a sale on PS5.
