Summary

  • Overwatch 2's D.Va Heist skin has a bug, causing a second D.Va head to emerge from her MEKA suit.
  • The bug is due to D.Va's complex animations and emotes across different skins, revealing hidden parts of the character model.
  • This bug showcases developers' creative solutions to make games work seamlessly, sometimes resulting in amusing glitches.

A strange bug affecting Overwatch 2 character D.Va has turned her otherwise exciting Heist skin into a source of amusement and dread for fans of the playable hero. The bug speaks to the difficulty of making Overwatch 2 animations and emotes work across multiple skins that sometimes differ wildly in shape and size.

Overwatch might be one of the most successful games around when it comes to making and selling optional cosmetics for its characters. The game does not rely on an RPG-like progression system or on complex gear systems, instead incentivizing players to keep playing - and occasionally paying - to get new cosmetics. Chief among those cosmetics are skins. Every Overwatch 2 hero has multiple skins available through various means, across a wide range of influences. Some skins show Overwatch 2 characters at different stages of their careers, while others show off new concepts, and still others promote crossover promotions, such as the Overwatch x My Hero Academia collaboration.

Unfortunately, skins don't always come out perfectly. Such is the case with a strange and unsettling bug affecting the Overwatch 2 Season 12 D.Va Heist skin. As highlighted in a post shared by user ShiddyMage1, a strange issue is causing a second D.Va head to emerge from the inside of the character's MEKA suit, even when D.Va herself is shown outside the MEKA.

Overwatch 2 Bug Causes Second D.Va to Haunt MEKA Suit

The D.Va Heist skin isn't intentionally Halloween-themed, nor is it overtly scary in design or concept, instead showing D.Va off as a masked criminal riding a mech themed after a getaway car. However, the strange glitch makes D.Va's iconic MEKA armor seem haunted by D.Va's doppelganger or clone. Amused players reacted in mock horror to the idea of a haunted MEKA, jokingly wondering which D.Va is the "real" D.Va.

Veteran players explained that the glitch wasn't restricted to the Heist skin alone, but seems to emerge every so often with even the most popular Overwatch 2 D.Va skins. The bug is related to the way Blizzard animates D.Va, who is a particularly complex character to render. Because D.Va can emerge from her MEKA suit under certain conditions and fight on foot in a state some players call "Baby D.Va," Blizzard secretly hides portions of D.Va's character model inside the MEKA suit's model. This allows the model to quickly show D.Va placed correctly in the suit, saving time and resources that would be wasted trying to render her boarding sequence "properly." At typical combat speeds, this trick isn't noticeable by players, but the hidden face can occasionally be seen when using certain emotes or when examining the character model in the selection screen.

The strange bug that causes D.Va's mecha to host its own "Baby D.Va" inside itself serves to underline the creative solutions game developers use to make their games work as they need to without players noticing. That said, it can be amusing when the seams do show occasionally.
