Overwatch 2 has officially revealed Overwatch: Classic – a limited-time game mode that rolls back the clock, featuring iconic heroes, maps, and game modes as they were in 2016. This new Overwatch 2 game mode will be available from November 12 through December 2.
Recently, Overwatch 2 began teasing something retro coming to the FPS. Between a series of cryptic comments talking about nostalgia, profile pictures of the original Tracer design on social media, and a scheduled trailer, many fans suspected Overwatch 2 was planning something that evoked the original game.
Now, it seems those suspicions have been proven correct. The new Overwatch 2 trailer has revealed Overwatch: Classic – a limited-time game mode that brings the game back to where it all began. For three weeks, players can engage in 6v6 battles with no role or hero limitations, relive the Assault game mode, and experience versions of heroes that have not been seen in almost a decade. Overwatch: Classic kicks off on November 12, so fans don’t have to wait long to try it out.
Overwatch 2 Classic Limited Time Game Mode

The short trailer not only showed matches on maps like Volskaya Industries, Hanamura, and Temple of Anubis that are no longer in Overwatch 2 (when it comes to Quick Play and Competitive playlists, anyway), but flashed through several iconic overpowered hero abilities that have been drastically changed in the eight years since Overwatch 1 was released. Symmetra’s six Sentry Turrets, Cassidy’s stunning Flashbang, Hanzo's Scatter Arrow, Torbjorn’s upgradeable Turret and Armor Packs, Bastion’s Self-Repair and stationary Configuration: Sentry mode, Mercy’s full team Resurrect, and the all-Winston “Gorilla Warfare” team comps are all back in this game mode – for better or worse.
Overwatch: Classic is completely separate from the upcoming 6v6 tests in Overwatch 2. The first of these tests is set to start around December 17 – a week after the start of Season 14. Considering Overwatch: Classic ends on December 3, it seems like Overwatch 2 fans will have several different ways to play 6v6 over the next few months.
It remains to be seen if Overwatch: Classic will be a one-time thing, or if Blizzard will bring it back periodically in the future. However, given the excitement fans have already shown for the release, it seems like it is going to be a big hit. If this Overwatch 2 game mode is as popular as Junkenstein’s Revenge, it is possible Blizzard could extend its duration, bring it back at regular intervals, or even make it a permanent addition to the game.
