Summary

  • Overwatch 2 players are dissatisfied with the lack of transparency in the game's Competitive mode, wanting changes to be made.
  • Players are frustrated by how long it takes to get an update on their rank, missing how they could see the changes after every match like in the original game.
  • Developers Aaron Keller and Jared Neuss have acknowledged the need for changes in the Competitive mode, with details on the mode's future set to be shared next week.

Overwatch 2 players recently expressed their dissatisfaction with the free-to-play shooter game's Competitive mode due to its lack of transparency regarding a player's rank, something that Overwatch once had in its glory days. A few developers behind Overwatch 2 recently reached out to its player base to let them know that they are not alone in how they feel about the current state of the Competitive mode, and that changes are coming.

Overwatch 2 is nearly halfway through its sixth season, and along with it comes this season’s latest support hero, Illari, who recently joined its roster for the Competitive mode on August 24. While players were ready to compete with the new support hero, it was not as great of an experience as many players would have wanted. The addition of a PvE mode in Overwatch 2 has been checked off the developer’s to-do list, but now the next thing its playerbase is requesting of the team to tackle is to adjust its Competitive mode. Overwatch 2 players haven’t been too fond of the changes, or lack thereof, in this area.

Many Overwatch 2 players have voiced their frustration regarding the game’s Competitive mode due to a lack of features that were once present in the first iteration of Overwatch. Instead of the familiar SR (Skill Rating) that would adjust after each match, players instead have to guess their exact rank to determine their standing and how close they are to ranking up since tiers have replaced SR in Overwatch 2. Players have to first win five matches to know their new rank rather than knowing after just one game, regardless of whether it is a win or a loss.

Overwatch 2’s developers Aaron Keller and Jared Neuss recently confirmed that changes are bound to be made to Overwatch 2’s Competitive mode, but they do not know when those changes will be made. The team is holding off from commenting on the exact changes that will likely be made to the mode until their regular Director’s Take, a column on the official Overwatch website that shares Keller’s retrospective and thoughts on the future of the development of Overwatch, which will be shared next week.

Neuss agrees with Overwatch 2 players that the Competitive mode is one of the many features that could be improved upon. “We’ll be talking about Comp changes soon,” tweeted Neuss on a post by an Overwatch 2 player who tells him to stop caring for the skins and focus on the Competitive mode. “We know the system needs a major update.” There have been mixed responses to Neuss's tweet, as some players do not have trust in the developers and are not happy with their lack of urgency. This is not the only flaw players spotted in the Competitive mode. Players have suggested there should be harsher penalties when players leave matches in Overwatch 2. Leaving a match early in Competitive mode will leave a team at a disadvantage for the rest of the match. Compared to the casual Unranked mode, players risk deranking in Competitive mode when leavers abandon their team.

As fans wait for more information, players can enjoy what the Blizzard team has to offer for the long-awaited PvE mode. This season’s limited-time Underworld event has offered some interesting gameplay experiences, and fans can enjoy it for a few more days.

Overwatch 2 is available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series X.
