Overwatch 2 Reveals Freja's Backstory, Teases New Hero

The new hero cinematic for Freja in Overwatch 2 just teased the return of Emre Sarioglu, an Overwatch operative players have known about for almost 10 years. The bounty hunter hero gets into some dark dealings with Maximilien in the Overwatch 2 animated short, which wraps up with a shocking teaser featuring the familiar face at the very end.

During the recent Spotlight event, Blizzard revealed Freja, the new Overwatch 2 damage hero coming in Season 16. Internally coded as “Winddasher” due to her high mobility, Freja was a former search and rescue operative for Overwatch who became a bounty hunter after the organization was dissolved.

However, it looks like Freja’s bounty-hunting business has led her to cross paths with some dangerous and familiar faces. In “The Hunt Begins,” the new hero trailer for Freja, the bounty hunter offers a few captured criminals to Maximilien, the iconic Omnic leader and accountant for Talon in Overwatch 2. Negotiations between the two adversaries quickly grow hostile, leading to a confrontation where Freja defeats Maximilien’s bodyguards, showcasing some of the hero’s in-game abilities in the process. After the skirmish, Maximilien defuses the situation by paying Freja for the bounties, all while offering her a special mission. No name is given for the target, but the datapad shows a familiar image of Emre Sarioglu, a Turkish Overwatch operative who joined the organization after the Omnic Crisis. Freja agrees to hunt Emre down, though whether she plans to help him or turn him over to Maximilien remains a mystery.

Overwatch 2 Teases Emre in Freja Hero Trailer

Emre Sarioglu first appeared in a picture during Ana’s origin story back in 2016, but whom little was known about until Overwatch: Declassified in 2023. The combat medic fought alongside Reinhardt and Torbjorn when the latter lost his arm in an ambush, worked with Mercy and Sojourn to combat a radiation health crisis in Australia, and even helped organize Genji’s care and transfer into Overwatch custody. Players have speculated about Emre's addition as a hero in Overwatch since even before Brigitte was added, so his appearance in Freja's animated short has only served to reignite the flames of speculation surrounding the mysterious missing hero.

As for Freja, players won’t have to wait until Season 16 to try her out. Though she will officially arrive with the new season on April 22, fans can play Freja during her trial period in Overwatch 2 for three days starting March 21. Players can also expect a Freja motion comic on March 20, and a gameplay trailer to release alongside her playtest period.
