Warning: Spoilers for Overwatch 2 "Lucky Man" short story below
In a recent Overwatch 2 short story, Soldier: 76 and Sombra discovered that Talon was not actually behind the destruction of the Swiss Headquarters of Overwatch. This unlikely duo solve one of the oldest mysteries in the franchise, while also discovering a connection to the “Eye,” another of Overwatch 2’s oldest unanswered questions.
The history of the Overwatch faction is one of the oldest and most important pieces of lore in the eponymous franchise. The collapse of the paramilitary organization before its modern reformation was preceded by the destruction of its headquarters in Switzerland – an event that led to the “deaths” of Gabriel Reyes and Jack Morrison, better known as Reaper and Soldier: 76. Since this history was introduced in the Solider: 76 Origin Story video in 2015, it was widely believed that Reyes, backed by the terrorist organization Talon, was responsible for the destruction.
Overwatch 2 May Be Hiding Its Next Playable Hero in Plain Sight
Though Blizzard has been keeping its cards close to its chest regarding Overwatch 2's next playable hero, this character may be hiding in plain sight.
Now, a new Overwatch 2 short story has revealed that Reaper and Talon were almost certainly not behind the event. “Lucky Man,” a short story that appeared in the Heroes Ascendant Overwatch 2 anthology, was recently shared online for all fans to read for free. During the tale, Soldier: 76 and Sombra form an unlikely alliance while infiltrating a UN facility in Zurich as the city is under attack by Null Sector. After successfully stealing a strange disk from the preserved wreckage of the old headquarters, the two heroes discover a shocking truth: a mysterious group represented by an eye was likely responsible for the destruction of Overwatch, rather than Talon or Reyes.
Talon Didn’t Blow Up Overwatch Swiss Headquarters
The symbol discovered by Sombra and Soldier: 76 is described as “a stylized eye with three dots above the pupil and another three dots below it.” Keen-eyed Overwatch fans may recognize this icon from Sombra’s Origin Story when her hacking attempts were noticed, and later on her conspiracy board, connected to several other major organizations in Future Earth, including Talon, Overwatch, and Volskaya Industries.
This major reveal could have big implications for Overwatch 2 in the future. The “Eye” is one of the deepest conspiracies in the lore, and players have theorized about what it could mean for years. The fact that it and the destruction of Overwatch HQ are connected is significant, especially if Overwatch 2 is planning to set the Eye up as another major villainous faction even worse than Talon or Null Sector.
Overwatch 2 also recently teased a new hero during a reading of “The Pocket King” short story. In the video, Maximilien, the infamous Omnic Talon executive, types the number “43” onto a console – and with 42 heroes in the game right now, it is possible this could be a teaser of his imminent arrival. While Maximilien is likely not involved with the Eye conspiracy, it is exciting to see more old lore coming back to relevance in Overwatch 2.
