Summary

  • Overwatch 2 players are quitting the game because of the addition of Mauga, the 39th hero, due to the controversy surrounding his powerful abilities and lack of balance.
  • Mauga's abilities make him a dominant force on the battlefield, causing teams to revolve around him and leading to an unfair advantage for whichever team plays him.
  • Despite complaints, Mauga received a buff in the form of increased health, accuracy, and overhealth conversion rate, making him even more difficult to defeat.

The Overwatch 2 community is complaining about Mauga, the 39th hero added to the game, with several players announcing their decision to quit Blizzard’s FPS because of this tank hero. While the addition of a new hero in Overwatch 2 often disrupts the balance of the game until the developers adjust their abilities, Mauga has been creating more controversy than any other Overwatch 2 hero before him.

Mauga joined Overwatch 2 with the release of Season 8 on December 5, 2023. This Samoan tank hero came with powerful abilities, allowing him to thrive on the battlefield, dealing damage to his enemies while healing himself as well as nearby allies. Mauga’s Ultimate Ability, Cage Fight, deploys a barrier that traps him with his enemies and grants the tank hero unlimited ammo, letting him wreak havoc on his opponents while preventing them from fleeing. Mauga works especially well with a team that plays close to him, as most of his abilities require him to fight at close range.

Ever since the release of Mauga, Overwatch 2 players have been complaining about the lack of balance affecting this tank hero. Mauga is not only able to resist incoming damage like all other tank heroes, but he can also deal massive damage, heal himself and nearby allies, gain extra temporary health, and become unstoppable when he charges forward. Because of Mauga’s abilities, most Overwatch 2 competitive teams need to revolve entirely around this tank hero if they do not want to lose their games. This lack of balance caused several Overwatch 2 players to leave Blizzard’s FPS, as they can no longer play their favorite heroes and feel that Mauga brings an unfair advantage to whichever team is playing this tank hero.

Despite the regular complaints from the Overwatch 2 community regarding the Samoan tank hero, Mauga received yet another buff when he became available in Competitive Play matches on December 19. His base health has been converted into armor, which takes longer for opponents to shred through. Moreover, his accuracy at range has been increased and his Incendiary Chaingun only takes 10 shots to ignite his enemies, down from its previous 15 shots. Last but not least, Mauga’s Berserker passive overhealth conversion rate increased from 50% to 60%, allowing the tank hero to survive longer than he used to even if he didn’t receive healing from his teammates.

Those who enjoy playing Mauga complained about a key element missing from this tank hero: cosmetics. Unlike other Overwatch 2 heroes, Mauga doesn’t have any Epic or Legendary skins besides the Magma and Bonesplinter attires available respectively in the shop and in the Battle Pass. Every other hero has Epic and Legendary skins that players can purchase with Overwatch 2 credits, but for now, Mauga only has basic recolors of his default appearance.
