Overwatch 2 is making a few changes to how Mythic hero skins are unlocked, with purchases now following a specific pattern that should help players feel more satisfied as they buy each tier. These fundamental changes to the Mythic skin unlock system are coming in Overwatch 2 Season 19 on October 14, starting with Divine Druid Lifeweaver.
Mythic skins in Overwatch 2 are customizable cosmetics unlocked with Mythic Prisms, a special kind of premium currency. Starting with Overwatch 2 Season 12's Mythic skin for Reaper, these cosmetics have followed something called the Evolution Paradigm, meaning Mythic skins seemingly "leveled up" with each tier, growing more powerful and detailed as one progresses through the Battle Pass.
Popular Overwatch 2 Main is Losing the Fight to Marvel Rivals
While one beloved Overwatch 2 hero has had a good run as of late, Marvel Rivals’ latest roster addition is giving their fans a reason to jump ship.
New Mythic Skin Tier System in Overwatch 2
However, as explained in a recent Overwatch 2 Developer update, this made some fans feel like the earlier tiers of these premium skins were not exciting to unlock or use, leading to a massive overhaul of this system in Season 19. As explained by game producer Ren Soanes at the 5:30 mark of the video, Mythic skins in Overwatch 2 will now follow a new pattern: the first tier will include the full base skin with special visual and sound effects, and the second tier unlocks customizable parts, such as Divine Druid Lifeweaver’s flower back piece options. The third upgrade will unlock all color variants, while the final tier adds extra ambient visual effects.
Mythic Aspects will still require players to buy all four tiers before they can be purchased for a Mythic skin.
- Tier 1: Mythic skin, visual and sound effects
- Tier 2: Customizable parts
- Tier 3: All color variants
- Tier 4: Ambient visual effects toggle
It is currently unclear if this new system will affect old Mythic cosmetics, but it does not seem like it, as this would require a lot of work shuffling around features on the previous 18 skins. Instead, fans should expect Mythic skins to follow this tier pattern with Divine Druid Lifeweaver in Overwatch 2 Season 19 onward.
Season 19 is breaking the mold with Mythics in another big way as well. For the first time in history, Overwatch 2 is releasing two Mythic hero skins in one season, with Cyber Fuel Junkrat coming during the mid-season update. It remains to be seen if this unrevealed skin is an outlier, or if every season from now on will have two Mythic hero skins.
Of note, Kiriko is also getting a Mythic weapon skin this Overwatch 2 season called Spirit Keeper, featuring blazing blue flames, a special flourish, and a vulpine kill effect. The unlockable tiers for Mythic weapon skins aren't changing from patterns used by these premium cosmetics in the past, so fans can expect future Mythic weapon skins to continue working similarly. That said, with three Mythic skins in Season 19, fans will need to be much more discerning with their budget of Mythic Prisms from the Overwatch 2 Premium Battle Pass.
