Overwatch 2 Shows Off 2 New Maps Coming in Season 6

Overwatch 2 Season 6 is right around the corner and to drum up a little excitement, Blizzard has shown off two brand-new Flashpoint maps. The fantasy themed Season 5 added a lot of new content to Overwatch 2, headlined by the annual Summer Games limited time event which not only brought back Lucioball, but added a brand-new mode called Winston's Beach Volleyball.

However, it's likely that Overwatch 2 fans have been anticipating Season 6 as it aims to be one of the bigger seasons in franchise history. In addition to a new support hero and the arrival of a Hero Mastery System, Overwatch 2 is finally adding PvE story missions after plenty of delays to that side of the game. Through Invasion, players can work together through three story missions across Rio de Janeiro, Toronto, and Gothenburg. The Flashpoint mode is another new addition which is influenced by Control and Assault to offer multiple objectives in a match as two teams fight across all new maps to be the first to earn 3 points.

While Blizzard has confirmed Suravasa and New Junk City previously, the company recently gave fans a sweeping look at both locations through the Overwatch 2 Twitter account. Suravasa is a map based in India set on the river Roshani and features a mix of bother nature and man-made structures. The video fly through showcases plenty of striking architecture, fountains, and temples along with trees, sprawling vines, and natural structures built into the city. If players look hard enough, they may even see crocodiles hanging out at the mouth of the river.

Following that reveal, Blizzard also showed off New Junk City, a map based in Australia which serves as the home of characters like Roadhog, Junker Queen, and Junkrat. As fans may expect, the city is a heavy combination of outback sands and metal structures which may resemble Junkertown on the surface level. However, New Junk City is massive with plenty of city streets, neon signs, and even the arena seen in Junker Queen's debut announcement trailer for Overwatch 2.

The influx of new content likely can't come at a better time as some of the new trickling out of Overwatch 2 lately hasn't been all that positive. In July, Activision Blizzard laid off around 50 employees mostly from the eSports division, putting a lot of doubt into the future of the Overwatch League. Worse yet, the Activision Blizzard earnings call for Q2 2023 indicated that both Overwatch 2 player count and engagement levels have declined. With the arrival of PvE missions in Season 6, Activision Blizzard is likely hoping to see that trend reversed.
