Summary
- Overwatch 2 players experienced server issues after a recent update, leading to strange gameplay footage of a player moonwalking to victory in a match without any other players.
- While getting play of the game for doing nothing is certainly funny, especially when paired with the emote, the clip is also quite unsettling due to the lack of noise and overwhelming emptiness of the map.
- The cause of this occurrence is uncertain, but it is believed to be a glitch with the matchmaking servers due to the update that brought Illari to competitive games.
An Overwatch 2 player recently experienced a server issue that led to them playing an online game without anyone else. This bizarre Overwatch 2 match led to some strange gameplay footage, including one of the best Play of the Game highlights imaginable.
On August 24, Overwatch 2 rolled out a sizable update that included tons of bug fixes and a nerf for the new support hero Illari. That said, some players experienced server latency, disconnects, and other strange phenomena after the update went live.
Redditor and Overwatch 2 player Goku-sann shared video footage of their own tangle with these server issues. Shortly after the update went live, they entered into an online match which took them to the iconic Overwatch 2 map Watchpoint: Gibraltar. However, for some reason, no other players loaded into Goku-sann’s match. With no enemies to fight, Goku-sann escorted the payload without incident, literally moonwalking the hovercraft to its destination in an eerily silent map as Lucio.
It is hard to say what exactly caused this bizarre occurrence. Despite Overwatch 2’s poor Steam reviews, tons of people are still playing the game, so it is definitely not from a dearth of players. Considering other fans experienced similar disconnects and issues around the same time, the most likely explanation is a glitch with the matchmaking servers due to the patch and inclusion of Illari in competitive games.
Either way, Goku-sann’s fellow Overwatch 2 players got a kick out of the video. Many applauded them for using Lucio’s Moonwalk emote to create what was one of the best Overwatch 2 Play of the Game highlights they have ever seen. Others shared stories of their own server issues – Overwatch 2 fan gs-28 shared a particularly wholesome story of the servers failing to backfill leavers, only for both teams to work together to unlock achievements. With over 3,000 upvotes and almost 100 comments, it is clear everyone agreed that a win is still a win, even if it is unorthodox.
Overwatch 2 Season 6: Invasion is well under way, bringing with it some of the biggest changes the game has seen in recent memory. Players have had a few weeks to play Illari, battle across the massive new Flashpoint maps, and experience the Overwatch 2 Story Missions and the new Underworld PvE mode. Though it is clear players still have plenty of justified grievances with Overwatch 2, it is safe to say the game is in the best place it has been since it entered Early Access a year ago.
Overwatch 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
