Summary

  • New support hero Space Ranger has been teased in Overwatch 2 with a crashed spaceship in the Dorado map.
  • A Morse code message and existing Mei dialogue hint at Space Ranger's arrival from Mars.
  • Fans are also reporting error messages during matches, suggesting a possible early trial for Space Ranger.

A spaceship has crashed into the Dorado map in Overwatch 2. This mysterious vessel contains clues in the form of a message in Morse code and a photograph that all but confirms it is a teaser for Space Ranger, the new support hero in Overwatch 2 Season 12.

Overwatch 2 just rolled out a massive mid-season balance patch that gave a much-needed power boost to its tank heroes. The update also marked the start of the Transformers collab, plus the beginning of this year’s Summer Games.

With Blizzard considering reworking Hanzo in a future season of Overwatch 2, they need to be careful how they go about reimagining his character.

However, this update also included a new Easter egg on one of its maps. A small spaceship can be found crashed in the center of the courtyard of the first attacker spawn point of the Dorado map. This new arrival coincides with the disappearance of the mysterious comet many Overwatch 2 fans found in the skies a few weeks earlier, confirming a connection between the two. Based on the contents of the crashed pod, this vessel is almost certainly a teaser for Space Ranger.

Space Ranger Has Landed in Overwatch 2’s Dorado Map

Inside the pod, players can hear a series of rhythmic beeps that seem to be transmitting a message in Morse code. Overwatch 2 fan Coathar was able to crack the code, which indicated the ship belongs to someone named “J.” A photograph of Mei and another woman – presumably “J” – can be found in the vessel as well. On the Lijiang Tower map, Mei occasionally mentions a grad school friend named Jiayi who works at its aerospace program, suggesting that Space Ranger is likely Mei’s old friend, who has recently returned from Mars.

Were these hints not exciting enough, some Overwatch 2 fans have reported a familiar error window appearing during their matches at times. The popup indicates that some hero customizations aren’t available, and has previously only appeared shortly before the early trials for Mauga and Venture in Overwatch 2, suggesting Blizzard may be preparing to do the same for Space Ranger.

According to the in-game interface, Overwatch 2 Season 12 is set to begin on August 20. The early playtests for both Mauga and Venture were about a month before the heroes came to Overwatch 2, so fans might be learning more about this new support hero in the next couple of weeks. Until then, players can log into Overwatch 2 and complete in-game tasks for the Transformers and Summer Games events to earn icons, name plates, titles, sprays, and a bunch of Battle Pass experience to make sure they’re ready for the next season.
