Summary
- Overwatch 2's BlizzCon 2023 presentation showcased the new tank hero Mauga, but there may be another tank hero hidden in the footage.
- At BlizzCon 2023, video footage of the hero selection screen showed a new tank character in Overwatch 2 using a placeholder image.
- Two new heroes, Venture and a still unnamed Support hero with a Space Ranger codename, are also set to join the hero roster in Overwatch 2 in upcoming seasons.
Though Mauga, a Samoan tank hero who dual wields miniguns, was the star of BlizzCon 2023’s Overwatch 2 presentation, it would seem that Blizzard may have left a sneak peek of another tank hero amidst the footage. In addition to Mauga, Overwatch 2 is getting a new PvP mode, as well as a rework of its Competitive Rank system. Players will no longer have to complete five games to see where they land, as their rank progress will now update on a per-match basis.
Over the course of the next couple of seasons, Blizzard will add Mauga and two new announced characters to the hero roster in Overwatch 2. One of them was revealed to be Venture, a Canadian damage hero and Overwatch’s first non-binary playable character. Venture is able to drill underground as part of their kit, as well as shoot a projectile that explodes after traveling a set distance. The other hero has been kept under wraps, though Blizzard stated that she would be a Support hero with a Space Ranger codename and a highly mobile, vertical type of gameplay.
However, keen eyes across social media have spotted that there may be a fourth hero on the way to Overwatch 2. Whether revealed by accident or on purpose, video footage of the hero selection screen showed a new tank character in Overwatch 2 using a placeholder image. Given their positioning between Sigma and Winston, many players are wondering if Sound Quake will finally make a debut after being hinted at in the 2014 announcement trailer for Overwatch all those years ago. The mysterious hero was spotted by people such as Bauernworldwide on Reddit and DylanDubs on Twitter, giving rise to a new round of speculation among the Overwatch community.
Player feedback on Mauga in Overwatch 2 has thus far been overwhelmingly positive, and given that reactions to new heroes have always been traditionally mixed due to the competitive nature of the game, Blizzard can mark this down as a win. Mauga is playable from November 3 through November 5, so players who haven’t yet had a chance to check the new hero out should hop onto the game.
Given the state of tank heroes in Overwatch 2, Mauga and the mystery character will no doubt be a breath of fresh air for the role. While Mauga is coming in Season 8, given the pace of content in Overwatch 2, players will have to wait until at least Season 14 to get their hands on the other tank teased at BlizzCon 2023.
