Summary

  • Overwatch 2's free Underworld event introduces a new modifier called Ultimate Zones, where players must occupy marked zones on the ground to charge up their ultimate abilities.
  • Players must actively damage enemies while in the marked zones to build up ultimate charge, adding an extra challenge to the game.
  • The selection of heroes available for this modified Underworld mission is strategic, with Roadhog and Ashe being particularly effective in the ultimate circles.

Overwatch 2's free Underworld event is receiving a fun new modifier sure to shake things up in the limited-time mode. Underworld came to Overwatch 2 as part of the game's largest seasonal update yet, Invasion, which also brought long awaited PvE missions, the new full-time Flashpoint mode, and the latest support hero Illari to the popular shooter.

Invasion's Underworld event, having launched alongside three permanent story missions, is a free mode where players need to work together to build the Push mode robot TS-1 and escort him to the end of an expanded segment of the King's Row map. The original version of the Underworld mission gives players access to Winston, Tracer, Torbjorn, and Lucio, and is being updated each week with different heroes and modifiers. Last week's Death From Above variant introduced a modifier that has players dodging lethal missile volleys as they attempt the same task of building and guiding TS-1 to the end of King's Row, giving players a different set of heroes to choose from: Reinhardt, D.Va, Soldier: 76, Genji, Mercy, and Brigitte.

As it's a new week, Overwatch 2 took to Twitter to announce the latest Underworld variant mission named Ultimate Zones. This shake-up introduces a new modifier where players need to occupy marked zones on the ground in order to charge up their much-needed ultimate abilities. Underworld's Ultimate Zones mission lets players pick only one tank, Roadhog, three DPS heroes in Ashe, Cassidy, and Junkrat, and two supports in Baptiste and Moira.

Interestingly, merely standing in the blue ultimate circles that randomly spawn on the ground isn't enough to gain charge. Players must actively damage enemies while in these circles to actually build up ultimate charge, which can happen rather quickly depending on the hero. The blue circles only last a couple of seconds, though, before players need to find a new one or wait for them to respawn. The selection of heroes available for this modified Underworld mission is smart, as Roadhog players can pull enemies closer to them while in a circle to ensure they do enough damage to build their ultimate. Additionally, Ashe makes a great pick, being able to nab enemies from a circle at range with her rifle or set them aflame with her dynamite explosion.

Very few Overwatch 2 players have been able to find success with Invasion's PvE story missions on Legendary difficulty, and that's likely the same case with Underworld. This new Ultimate Zones modifier is sure to give players on Legendary an extra tough challenge, likely making players strategize plays with certain heroes and abilities while in the ultimate circles. Players should expect the third and final Underworld modifier to be revealed next week as the event begins to wrap up.

Overwatch 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
