For the first time in several months, Overwatch 2’s future hero releases are largely a mystery. Wuyang, the water-bending support character formerly known under the codename of Aqua, is just weeks away from their debut. Hero 45 has also been teased, with the character expected to be a sword-wielding gladiator, though their exact role is unclear.

Beyond these two characters, though, just about anything or anyone could come to Overwatch 2 next. However, while many fans may be more intrigued by potential abilities, that's not the only thing to be hyped about. By building off of a specific Easter egg, a future hero could have the most memorable personality in a cast full of standouts. Specifically, said hero should be a fourth wall-breaker like She-Hulk, Deadpool, Tank Dempsey, and other iconic figures from pop culture.

Overwatch Has Already Put a Dent in the Fourth Wall

While some Overwatch 2 players may think that a fourth wall-breaker is out of place for Blizzard’s hero shooter, realistically, it’d be a natural successor to an existing secret. Though there are plenty of referential sprays and voice lines, nothing compares to Lucio acknowledging the player’s actions. Spotting this Easter egg is relatively simple, as all players need to do is look at Lucio’s weapon after adjusting their volume settings. If players turn down their master volume, Lucio’s Sonic Amplifier will display an empty bar, with his weapon responding directly to the player’s audio choices. With this secret being over half a decade old, and not exactly common knowledge, many players - especially OW2 newcomers - may have no idea it exists.

This Easter egg was present in the original Overwatch as well, with Team 4’s eye for detail being a consistent strength of the series.

Overwatch 2 Could Work Wonders With a Fourth Wall-Breaking Hero

Regardless of the role assigned to this hypothetical hero, there are some fun opportunities that would be available to Blizzard if it were willing to pursue such an idea. These include:

  • Dialogue directly referencing the player - Perhaps the hero could comment on the player’s skin choice, criticize their match performance, or judge them for having more play time on other characters, leading to a number of standout jokes. Their hero select animation could have them interact with the screen, even pulling control away from the player to make them select them if hovered over for too long.
  • Dialogue acknowledging Overwatch 2 is a video game - Much like Tank Dempsey would poke fun at Treyarch’s game design in classic CoD Zombies maps, the hero could directly ask Blizzard for buffs or complain about nerfs. They could comment directly on match time and other aspects of the game, confusing the characters around them and leading to some memorable back-and-forth conversations.
  • A kit that takes advantage of the hero’s ability to break the fourth wall - Perhaps the hero directly messes with players on the other team through their Ultimate, briefly reversing their controls, draining their Ultimate charge, and so on. Alternatively, they could mess with the HUD elements when an ability is used, reaching toward the screen to add segments to their health bars, lower cooldowns, or manually charge their ult meter.

Such a character would instantly stand out from the rest of the Overwatch 2 cast, with it easy to imagine some interactions where Sombra sees the character as an even better hacker than herself or someone unhinged like Sigma actually being able to grasp what they’re talking about. The only challenge for Blizzard would be adding such a character and having it make sense without removing stakes from the world. Perhaps Superboy Prime could be used as an inspiration, with a fan of the Overwatch world from a different universe inserting themselves into the fictional setting with all the knowledge they’ve gained from playing the game. Alternatively, a character could simply have the ability to break the fourth wall for no reason beyond it being a fun gimmick, with Blizzard just being careful not to overdo it. Regardless of the approach taken, it would be great to see a character inspired by the Lucio audio secret come to fruition, as they could offer even more Easter eggs with a similar vibe.
