Palia: Shot in the Dark Quest Guide
Shot in the Dark is an Elderwood-exclusive story quest where you unlock the recipe to catch the infected creatures that have plagued the region.
Some players may also wonder how to start Adventure on the Horizon in Palia, which has a few prerequisites to tick off first to trigger the quest. This handy walkthrough guide details how to begin and complete it, including how to complete the head-scratching Adventure on the Horizon puzzle.
How To Start Adventure On The Horizon In Palia
To start the Adventure on the Horizon quest in Palia, it's not necessary to complete any story progression related to the Elderwood expansion. However, there are a few other quest requirements you need to tick off to get started, which are:
- Reach at least level 30 overall in Palia.
- Visit the Elderwood zone at least once.
- Complete Palia's Learning the Ropes quest, which is an introductory quest new Palia players complete early on in the game.
Provided you meet the above requirements, head to your Housing Plot and speak to Auni there to start Adventure on the Horizon. Auni, who’s normally into catching bugs, has found a mysterious secret cave and has marked its location on your map — it's time to go check it out!
Where To Find The Secret Cave Entrance
You can find the secret cave entrance in Adventure on the Horizon at approximately point D-8 on the map. You can get there by fast-traveling from Elderwood's Central Stables and using the stables there to fast-travel to De Mer Dock. Starting at the De Mer Dock fast-travel station, search for the small opening at the bottom of the cliffs called 'Hidden Cave,' as pictured above. If you're struggling to find it, look for the small bridge walkway next to the southwest entrance to the Red Blossom Cave map area to find the Hidden Cave entrance on the right, as shown in the video below:
Once inside the Hidden Cave, head inside to trigger a scene of you speaking with Auni and Nai'o. After you've finished talking to them, head left down the slope to follow Auni and Nai'o deeper into the cave. Chat with Auni and Nai'o again, who you can find standing near a door with a symbol on it. Talk to Auni a third time, then go through the door on the left with the symbol that is marked 'Hidden Cave.'

The Toadstool Floatfish is one of the 20 native Elderwood fish in Palia. Check out this guide to learn where to find it and how to catch it fast.
Adventure On The Horizon Puzzle Solution
Go through the door to find a mysterious puzzle on the wall ahead. You can chat with Auni and Nai'o again, who unfortunately don't know how to solve it, or you can dive straight into solving the puzzle. To solve Palia's Adventure on the Horizon puzzle, you need to slide the pieces left, right, up, or down so they form the correct picture, which you can do by starting with the second piece down from the top left corner, as shown in the video below:
Adventure On The Horizon Quest Rewards
Once you've solved the puzzle, you can open the treasure chest behind to find a Pirate Treasure Map and the recipe for Prismbeard's Lamp. Afterward, speak to Auni a final time to complete Adventure on the Horizon, receive +20 Renown, and unlock the next quest called Prismbeard's Lost Treasure.
