There are various ways to trigger quests in Palia, from finding hidden items across the map to speaking to specific villagers and beyond. One hidden Discovery Quest you can trigger by chance is Palia's Lock and Key quest, which takes you on a treasure chest trail using special elemental keys. However, with there being several Discovery Quests to unlock in Palia's Radiance Rising update, you might wonder how to start Lock and Key in Palia and what you need to do to complete it.

Palia: How To Get To Elderwood

Here's where to find Elderwood in Palia and how to get started with the expansion.

Once triggered using the Water Key, Palia's Lock and Key proves to be a short and sweet quest that enables you to find and open several locked chests that you might have spotted around the Elderwood's Hidden Cave by deciphering the riddle within each one. Here's what you need to do to get started, including where to find all four keys necessary to complete the quest.

How To Start Lock And Key In Palia (Water Key Location)

Finding the Water Key and triggering Lock and Key quest in Palia

To start Lock and Key in Palia, you need to find the Water Key. Doing so triggers Lock and Key as a Discovery Quest you can stumble across in the Elderwood. However, finding the Water Key is a game of chance, as it has no specific location. Instead, you can find the Water Key by catching frogs anywhere on the Elderwood map, with a chance of the key spawning on successfully catching a specific green-colored frog called the Grumpy Granite Rockhopper.

Palia water key chest location

In Palia, you can typically find frogs, including Grumpy Granite Rockhoppers, near ponds and rivers anywhere across the Elderwood map, such as by the swamps of Mauvais Way, the ponds of The Fallen Aqueduct, and the rivers around Mitana Grove. Specifically, we found the frog with the Water Key at Mitana Grove. Once you catch the frog carrying the Water Key, you automatically unlock Palia's Lock and Key quest, with the next step being to find the lock for it.

Catching frogs works similarly to bug-catching in Palia, meaning that you'll need to grab them using the Makeshift Belt and Standard Smoke Bombs. You can craft Standard Smoke Bombs using Clay and Sundrop Lily, or you can buy them from Zeki's store.

To catch a Grumpy Granite Rockhopper, you'll need to equip the Makeshift Belt tool and use it to throw around two or three Standard Smoke Bombs at the critter, which works better when the frog is stationary on land. Once the frog appears dazed and confused, you can approach and grab it to catch it.

Water Key Treasure Chest Location (Where To Find The First Lock)

The first objective in Palia's Lock and Key quest is to find the first lock by solving the first riddle - going to the place where the Revenge ran its course. This means returning to the Hidden Cave (at point D-8 on the map) to find a locked chest that you might have already encountered in Palia's The True Treasure, Adventure on the Horizon, or Prismbeard's Treasure quests.

Head down the slope inside the Hidden Cave to find the first lock (treasure chest) in a small nook at the bottom of Shipwreck Cave with a glowing water symbol above it, as pictured above. Interact with the chest to open it automatically using the Water Key, which gives you the Earth Key and another riddle. You'll now need to use the Earth Key to unlock the Earth chest to get the next key and riddle in the trail.

If you need to check out any of the quest riddles again, you can do so via the Quest Pouch in the inventory menu.

Earth Key Treasure Chest Location

Earth chest location in Palia's Lock and Key quest

To find the Earth treasure chest (the second lock), head up the nearby slope inside the Hidden Cave and follow it around past the steps (where you may see the Prismbeard statue from Prismbeard's Lost Treasure quest if you've got the Pirate Spyglass equipped).

As shown in the video above, from the Water Key chest, keep following the path up until you find the next treasure chest below the leaf symbol (Earth symbol) at the top of the slope opposite Prismbeard's ship. Open it with the Earth Key to get the Fire Key (Key with Fire Symbol), and the next riddle in the lock and key hunt.

Fire Key Treasure Chest Location

To find the Fire treasure chest (the third lock), turn around and head up the steps towards the Secret Cave entrance within the Hidden Cave area opposite Prismbeard's ship. You can find the treasure chest below the fire symbol and torch on the wall, just right of the Secret Cave door. Open it to receive the Air Key (the Key with Air Symbol) and the final riddle.

Air Key Treasure Chest Location

To find and open the last chest using the Air Key, jump into the rocky gap right of the Fire Key chest. Immediately behind you lies the treasure chest with the Air symbol on the wall above it. Open the chest using the Air Key to complete Palia's Lock and Key quest, giving you one final curious message seemingly from Prismbeard.
