Summary

  • The Bug Catching skill in Palia is introduced at the start of the game, and it's worth leveling up as it's a great way to make money.
  • Some rare bugs in Palia, like the Ancient Amber Beetle, Fairy Mantis, and Jewelwing Dragonfly, are valuable and can be caught in specific locations.
  • Players should use the right tools, such as smoke bombs, to catch these valuable bugs and keep them in their inventory for when they appear.

Bugs can be found everywhere in the cozy MMO, Palia, and players get introduced to the Bug Catching skill right at the start of the game by the young and enthusiastic Auni, who very generously provides the player with an abundance of smoke bombs. Most players might not be quite as enthusiastic about bugs as Auni is, but it's still worth leveling this skill as it's a great way to make some money.

Palia: 8 Villagers You Should Befriend Early

Villagers in Palia can turn out to be great friends - especially the ones that enhance players' skills.

Some bugs can be incredibly valuable, specifically the rarer ones, which can sell for over 500 gold. Despite them being rare, some of these more valuable bugs aren't actually too tricky to come by, so it's well worth keeping on top of the Bug Catching skill. Players should also keep the right items in their inventory to catch these bugs whenever they appear!

8 Ancient Amber Beetle

Chance Of Spawning When Chopping Down A Tree

Palia Ancient Amber Beetle
  • Base Value - 360g, Star Value - 540g.
  • Location - Bahari Forest (Any Time Of Day).
  • Best Tool To Catch - Sticky Smoke Bombs.

The Ancient Amber Beetle is the rarest bug in the game and also the oldest. Supposedly, this ancient beetle existed even back when Humans did, well before the time of the Majiri. There's a 5% chance of this mythical bug spawning when felling large or medium sapwood trees anywhere in Bahari Bay.

However, the Ancient Amber Beetle can also be found roaming the Flooded Steps, The Outskirts, Proudhorn Pass, the Statue Garden, and the Thorny Thicket. Their high selling price makes them a valuable find, so players should watch out for their distinct, almost gold tint and be wary of their speed.

7 Fairy Mantis

Found In The Fields And Cliffs Of South Bahari Bay

Palia Fairy Mantis
  • Base Value - 360g, Star Value - 540g.
  • Location - Pulsewater Plains, Hideaway Bluffs, and above the Pavel Mines (Any Time Of Day).
  • Best Tool To Catch - Standard Smoke Bombs.

The Fairy Mantis is only a recent discovery among the Majiri, as it was previously thought to be a myth. However, the Fairy Mantis is very much real and catchable in Palia and will net any gamer a healthy gold reward if they manage to catch one.

It moves in a more predictable movement pattern, making it easier to catch, but its chances of spawning are rare. It's purple in color, although it looks almost iridescent as it moves around. The Fairy Mantis is not only one of the most valuable bugs in the game, but it's also one of the coolest and looks great in a display tank.

6 Jewelwing Dragonfly

Found Near Cave Entrances On Cliffs

Palia Jewelwing Dragonfly
  • Base Value - 360g, Star Value - 540g.
  • Location - Exclusively on the cliffs above Pavel Mines in Bahari Bay (Any Time Of Day.)
  • Best Tool To Catch - Standard Smoke Bombs.

This beautiful dragonfly looks like a badge that could be stuck on bags or clothing; however, it's very much an agile insect that can be somewhat tricky to catch. With a golden body but wings that look like a stained-glass window, there's no wonder that this bug is one of the most valuable in the game.

Palia Romance Options
Palia: Best Romances, Ranked

There are nine romance options in Palia for players to pursue, but some are better than others.

The Jewelwing Dragonfly zips around speedily, and players should always wait for it to stop its movement before attempting to throw a smoke bomb. It's not an easy insect to catch, but it's highly rewarding for those that can manage it.

5 Rainbow-Tipped Butterfly

Found In The Fields And Cliffs Of Southern Bahari Bay

Palia Rainbow-Tipped Butterfly
  • Base Value - 360g, Star Value - 540g.
  • Location - Pulsewater Plains, Hideaway Bluffs, and above the Pavel Mines (Between 3:00 AM and 6:00 PM).
  • Best Tool To Catch - Supreme Smoke Bombs.

This stunning butterfly is completely white except for the tips of its wings, which glow in a vibrant array of multicolored patterns. The ancient legends of Palia suggest that this butterfly got its rainbow tips from dipping its wings into the magical Well of Flow, or maybe it's just naturally pretty.

This beautiful butterfly can prove one of the most difficult bugs to catch, so players should make sure they have a number of supreme smoke bombs and/or sticky smoke bombs to aid them. Players should also take care in differentiating the Rainbow-Tipped Butterfly from the Common Blue Butterflies as they appear highly similar at first glance.

4 Azure Stonehopper

Found In The Fields And Mountains Of South Bahari Bay

Palia Azure Stonehopper
  • Base Value - 150g, Star Value - 225g.
  • Location - Pulsewater Plains, Hideaway Bluffs, and outside the Pavel Mines (Any Time Of Day).
  • Best Tool To Catch - Standard Smoke Bombs.

This blue fellow will sometimes be hopping around like a madman and sometimes be standing completely still. Either way, it's hard to miss this shiny blue critter that contrasts against its environment. They are larger than Common Field Crickets, making them more identifiable; however, they are slightly harder to catch.

Azure Stonehoppers are not only a great way to earn some money, but they are also a great source of Silk Thread, which will often come in handy for the player. Their shiny blue/violet hue (which looks suspiciously similar to a large shiny pebble) makes them a great addition to any insect display.

3 Bahari Glowbug

Found In The Fields Of Bahari Bay

Palia Bahari Glowbug
  • Base Value - 145g, Star Value - 217g.
  • Location - Pulsewater Plains, Hideaway Bluffs, and above the Pavel Mines (Between 6:00 PM - 3:00 AM).
  • Best Tool To Catch - Standard Smoke Bombs.

The Bahari Glowbug is an interesting example of the bioluminescent fauna found throughout Palia and can prove a great addition to any insect collection due to its distinct glow. However, this glowbug is also quite a valuable find, providing the player with a great way to earn some extra gold.

They are easy to find in the night due to their glow and aren't too difficult to stun with a smoke bomb. Their movement can be quite erratic, however, so players should remain on their toes as they stealthily approach these bugs.

2 Princess Ladybug

Found Along The Coast of Kilima Lake

Palia Princess Ladybug
  • Base Value - 145g, Star Value - 217g.
  • Location - Whispering Banks, Fisherman's Lagoon, Remembrance Beach, Gillyfin Cove, and south Leafhopper Hills (Any Time Of Day).
  • Best Tool To Catch - Sticky Smoke Bombs.

The Princess Ladybug looks very different from how players might think a normal ladybug looks, as this one has a gorgeous purple color to it, which is where it gets its royal Princess title from, as it looks very regal. They are one of the smallest bugs in the game, sometimes making them hard to spot.

Princess Ladybugs are quite rapid, and their movement isn't halted when they are startled, so players should always use Sticky Smoke Bombs when attempting to catch these scurrying critters.

1 Raspberry Beetle

Found Around Badruu's Farm

Palia Raspberry Beetle
  • Base Value - 145g, Star Value - 217g.
  • Location - Badruu Farm, northern section of Leafhopper Hills (Any Time Of Day).
  • Best Tool To Catch - Sticky Smoke Bombs.

Raspberry Beetles are an interesting bug because their diet consists purely of raspberries. They're probably a nightmare for any farmers attempting to grow raspberries around Badruu's Farm, so catching them is likely to be a good thing. Not only are they annoying pests, but they can also be a great source of income.

Raspberry Beetles are one of the easiest insects to spot due to their bright red appearance; however, they are notably difficult to catch. These beetles also do not stop their movement once they are stunned, so once again, the Sticky Smoke Bomb will prove to be a reliable solution.
