Summary
- A dedicated fan creates a mod enabling Pal gliding in response to copyright claims by Nintendo.
- Pocketpair defends Palworld against the Nintendo lawsuit and hopes the game could eventually come to Switch 2.
A dedicated fan of Palworld has built a mod that reintroduces Pal gliding into Pocketpair’s open-world survival game. When Palworld was released into early access in 2024, the game drew a lot of comparisons with Nintendo’s juggernaut franchise, Pokemon.
In the months since Palworld gained notoriety as "Pokemon with guns", Nintendo has lodged several copyright claims against Pocketpair. The company alleges that certain features within Palworld share similarities found within the Pokemon franchise. The lawsuit has led Pocketpair to patch out certain aspects of the game. While the various courtroom accusations are ongoing, fans of Palworld have resorted to mods to ensure they still have access to some of the game's features.
'It Is Very Worth Having Your Game on Game Pass' Palworld Community Manager Claims
A Palworld community manager chimes in on the recent Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 discussion by singing praises to Xbox Game Pass.
In response to the ongoing nature of the claims, Pocketpair previously removed gliding on monsters in Palworld. Players now must use a glider to fly across the game’s large world. However, a user by the name of Primarinabee on Nexus mods has created the Glider Restoration mod to reinstate Pal gliding. The update requires a glider to be in the inventory, but when gliding is activated, players will once again be seen in the air with their Pals.
Dedicated Fan Adds Pal Gliding Back Into Palworld
Primarinabee notes that the Pal gliding mod should work on the current and future updates for Palworld, although there are some caveats. Firstly, if gamers are playing with others who don’t have the patch installed, they will only see the glider in action. Finally, some creatures may appear off-center when being summoned. If this happens, gamers are encouraged to log a bug report on the Nexus page, where this will be reviewed.
Fans will no doubt be happy to hear that a mod restoring Pal gliding to Palworld is available. Meanwhile, Pocketpair has prepared a lengthy rebuttal to the Nintendo lawsuit in which the developers cite games that predate Nintendo’s patents. The primary patent is JP7545191, the mechanic of capturing creatures and using them for battling. Pocketpair argues that combining mechanics from its previous game, Craftopia, with titles like Titanfall 2 and Far Cry, would give a similar system to that in Palworld.
Despite long and drawn-out legal issues with Nintendo, Pocketpair remains hopeful that Palworld could see a release on the Switch 2. Palworld's communications director, John Buckley, stated the team is “100% open to the idea,” so long as Nintendo’s next console is powerful enough to run the game smoothly. It remains to be seen if gamers will ever see Palworld on the Switch 2, but Pocketpair will, at least, continue to support the breakout hit on other platforms.
