In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Mario obtains a mysterious egg during his time exploring Glitzville. The Yoshi that hatches from the egg can be one of seven different colors: green, red, blue, orange, pink, black, and white. While it may seem to be random luck of the draw, players can influence the game to give them the specific color they want, a process that requires a bit of planning and timing to execute. Let's go through what someone needs to do to get their preferred Yoshi.
Best Order To Upgrade Partners In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Still trying to decide which partners to upgrade first in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door? These are all of them, ranked from worst to best.
How to Get Yoshi in TTYD
As the players search for the third Crystal Star in Gltizville, players will enroll as a fighter in the Glitz Pit. As they climb up the ranks, fellow fighter KP Koopa will approach Mario once he reaches Rank 14. He'll mention the hot dog stand outside has a new special recipe featuring a Mystic Egg.
Players can walk outside to witness a scene with the hot dog stand's owner. The egg refuses to be eaten and joins Mario after a quick chase around the plaza. Until the egg hatches, it will follow the party around and wait patiently in the locker room between fights.
Players should continue to climb up the ranks in the Glitz Pit until they reach Rank 11. In their next match, they'll fight the Rank 10 fighters, the Iron Adonis Twins. The egg will only hatch after this particular fight. It's an impossible fight to win at the current moment, so players will either need to lose or flee the fight to progress.
Back in the locker room, the newly hatched Yoshi is eagerly waiting to assist Mario in the ring and joins his party in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
How to Choose Yoshi's Color in TTYD
As mentioned, Yoshi will hatch in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door in one of seven different colors. This color cannot be changed after Yoshi has hatched, and once the game has been saved afterward, there is no way to go back. What determines Yoshi's color is the amount of time spent with Mario after the egg joins the team:
- 0:00 to 6:00 = GREEN
- 6:00 to 9:00 = RED
- 9:00 to 11:00 = BLUE
- 11:00 to 15:00 = ORANGE
- 15:00 to 18:00 = PINK
- 18:00 to 19:00 = BLACK
- 19:00 to 20:00 = WHITE
The possible colors are on a twenty-minute cycle of real-time once Mario acquires the egg: the order is green, red, blue, orange, pink, black, white, and back around to green. Time will progress while the game is running except during loading screens and cutscenes (including fight introductions, registration, and payouts). The timer will not progress while on the Switch Home Page or in sleep mode.
As long as the player doesn't save Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door after hatching Yoshi, they should be able to reset and try again to get the color they want. It's recommended that players save after getting the Mystic Egg and keep a timer to assist in the process.
