The Rise of the Abyssal League in Path of Exile 2 introduced multiple new Abyssal-related mechanics to the game, some of which can be quite confusing for players who haven’t encountered similar things in the past.
Luckily, players who want to know more about how the Abyssal content works in PoE 2 can rest easy, as it is fairly straightforward once you get to know the gameplay loop. Here’s the breakdown.
What are Abyssal Pits in Path of Exile 2
Abyssal Pits are large gaping holes in the ground surrounded by fissures extending outward . These pits are easy to identify as the infected monsters near them glow a sickly green color. On the minimap, Abyssal Pits appear as green orbs connected by dotted lines that represent the fissures.
Abyssal Pits can be closed by defeating the monsters nearby. When a certain threshold is reached, a sound effect similar to the level-up chime will ring, and Abyss monsters corresponding to the tier of creatures you slew to close the pit will crawl out of it in a final wave.
If you defeat a rare monster, for example, another rare monster that inherits the modifier of the original will rise from the pit. But if you only cleared out a normal mob of creatures, only regular Abyss monsters will appear. Similarly, Essence monsters, Rogue Exiles, and even Bosses killed near an Abyssal Pit change what the final wave looks like.

Once the final wave is cleared, the pit will close, and an Abyssal Trove or Arsenal will appear. These chests offer powerful loot and are the main way to farm for Abyssal Bones, the currency used to create Desecrated items in PoE 2.
If there is more than one Abyssal Pit on a map, all of them need to be closed individually before the reward chest appears.
What are Abyssal Depths in Path of Exile 2
Sometimes, closing an Abyssal Pit will reveal the entrance to the “Abyssal Depths” instead of a regular reward chest. Abyssal Depths are small sub-areas full of Abyss creatures and a rare monster defending a cache of treasure chests. Defeating the final boss in these areas and claiming the chests is the main way to obtain Abyssal Omens and Lineage Supports in PoE 2.
Players can open a portal inside an Abyssal Depths map to fast travel to another location; doing so does not reset the instance. However, dying in the Abyssal Depths will permanently close that instance, and you will respawn at the nearest checkpoint on the main map.
What are Dark Domains in Path of Exile 2
Once players enter the endgame of PoE 2, Abyssal Depths will be replaced by Dark Domains, entrances that appear after Abyssal Pits are closed. These will lead players to larger maps called Abyssal Cities, which contain special rare bosses called Abyssal Commanders.
In addition to excellent loot, Abyssal Commanders also drop Kulemak's Invitation, a special item for the Witch class. Witches who have chosen the Lich ascendancy can use Kulemak's Invitation to jump inside the Well of Souls to unlock the Abyssal Lich ascendancy.
