Electrocute is a Lightning Elemental Ailment that confuses a lot of players in Path of Exile 2. This is because dealing regular Lightning damage to enemies appears to only apply Shock, which is another status ailment aligned with Lightning.

Players interested in Electrocute—either for the status effect itself or for fulfilling the requirement for skills like Combat Frenzy—will want to know how, exactly, to apply this elemental ailment to their enemies. Here's the breakdown.

How Does Electrocute Work in PoE 2

When applied, Electrocute reduces the action speed of the target to 0, effectively stopping them in their tracks and preventing them from taking any action. This effect is similar to Freeze, as it not only prevents them from moving, but stops any actions as well. This effect lasts for 5 seconds.

A key consideration with this ailment is that, unlike Shock, regular Lightning damage does not inherently apply Electrocute. Only Skills and Supports that expressly state that they inflict Electrocute Buildup—typically by adding the Electrocution property to regular damage—do so; regular Lightning Skills only inflict Shock.

If you have a damage source that applies Electrocute and you damage an enemy with it, that damage will inflict Electrocute Buildup, which will be mitigated by the enemy's Elemental Ailment Threshold, which scales directly with Life. Basically, the more Life an enemy has, the more difficult it will be for you to inflict Electrocute on them. Once the Electrocute buildup reaches its maximum, the target will be Electrocuted for 5 seconds.

Best Ways To Apply Electrocute in PoE 2

Certain builds in Path of Exile 2 require the use of Electrocute in order to trigger certain skills like Combat Frenzy. Following are the most efficient ways to do so.

  • Electrocuting Arrow : The most straightforward way to inflict Electrocute is to use skills like the Electrocuting Arrow to directly inflict Electrocute Buildup through Lightning damage.
  • Electrocute : This Support Gem makes it so that the Lightning damage from the Skill it is socketed into applies Electrocute buildup instead of Shock. However, since only one instance of a Support Gem can remain active at one time, you can only apply this to one Skill.
  • Shock Nova : This Spell has the same modifier as Electrocute Support Gem: "Lightning damage from this skill contributes to Electrocution buildup."
  • Kitoko's Current : This Unique Glove piece has the special modifier: "Lightning damage from Hits contributes to Electrocution buildup."
  • Brain Rattler : This Unique weapon has the modifier "All damage with this Weapon causes Electrocution buildup."
  • Beyond Reach : This Unique quiver has the special modifier: "Chaos damage from Hits also contributes to Electrocute buildup."
