Tangletongue Forked Spear is a Unique Spear in Path of Exile 2 with one of the most broken stats in the game. Its exclusive modifier, Forked Critical Hits, propels this otherwise mediocre item to the top echelons of Uniques a player can get their hands on.

Naturally, obtaining this item is no easy task, as its drop rate is quite low. Fortunately, there are multiple methods of obtaining this item.

How to Get Tangletongue in PoE 2

Tangletongue Forked Spear in path of exile 2

Tangletongue can be obtained in one of three ways in Path of Exile 2.

  1. Random drop from enemies.
  2. Using an Orb of Chance.
  3. Trading with other players.

Random Drop

Tangletongue is a part of the global drop pool and starts randomly dropping from Level 45+ enemies. Enemies at this level start appearing as early as Act 1 Cruel of the campaign.

Chance Orb

Using an Orb of Chance on a Normal (White) Forked Spear has a chance of converting into a Tangletongue Forked Spear. Note that the chance is fairly low, and there is a high probability that the item will be destroyed in the process instead.

Trade With Players

The most reliable way to obtain a Tangletongue is by going to the PoE 2 trade site and buying it from another player. Depending on the meta, the price of a Tangletongue varies between 1-30 Divine Orbs.

What Does 'Forked Critical Hits' on Tangletongue Mean?

forking critical hits description in path of exile 2

Tangletongue has the following fixed modifiers:

Tangletongue Modifiers

Grants Skill: Spear Throw

Adds (14–18) to (30–36) Physical Damage

+(10–20)% to Critical Hit Chance

+(15–25) to Intelligence

Forks Critical Hits

10% of Skill Mana Costs Converted to Life Costs

While the rest of the modifiers are self-explanatory, players may be confused about the meaning behind 'Forks Critical Hits'. Here is how it works:

Forking Critical Hits means that when the game determines whether or not an attack will be a Critical Hit or not, the die is rolled twice instead of once. Depending on how these dice rolls, the resulting Critical Hit is augmented. Here is the breakdown.

  • If one roll says it's a Critical Hit and the other roll says it's not a Critical Hit, the attack will be a Critical Hit.
  • If both rolls say it's not a Critical Hit, the attack will not be a Critical Hit.
  • If both rolls say it's a Critical Hit, the attack will be a Double Critical Hit, meaning the attack will take the Critical Damage Bonus and apply it twice instead of once.

Tangletongue's Forked Critical Hits work with Maligaro's Virtuosity's fixed 300% Critical Damage Bonus.

Another mechanic that interacts with Forked Critical Hits is called Lucky Hits. For those familiar with Dungeons & Dragons, Lucky essentially means you're rolling with advantage, using two dice and taking the higher result. So, if an attack is Lucky, the game will do the calculations for it twice, and the better result will be chosen as the one that is applied.

If a Critical Hit resulting from a Forked attack has the Lucky modifier, its damage calculations will be run twice, and the better result will be applied. Note that this is only relevant for Lucky Critical Hits; Lucky Attacks do not benefit.

Tangletongue's base damage is not very impressive, and every Critical Hit is essentially a multiplication applied to the base damage. When running a Tangletongue build, finding ways to increase your base damage is the most important factor, as the results will be exponentially higher. Of course, stacking Critical Hit Chance to a decent degree is also crucial.
