Path of Exile 2 is a complicated game with multiple layers of systems stacked on top of each other to create a complex web of gameplay that can be incredibly difficult to parse, even for veterans. Individually, these mechanics are relatively straightforward, but because there are so many of them, keeping track is often impossible.
One of these systems is Lineage Support Gems, a type of Support that functions differently compared to regular Gems. Players who stumble upon a Lineage Support and want to know how it functions can read on to find out.
What are Lineage Supports in Path of Exile 2
Lineage Supports in Path of Exile 2 are Unique Support Gems that can only be obtained as drops from enemies. Each Lineage Support has unique modifiers that aren’t available on any other Support, making each one’s value and viability different.
Not all modifiers on these gems are beneficial either, as, in order to balance out an extremely good stat, some of them have downsides to make it fair. Think of them like Unique items. While all of them offer unique effects, being unique doesn’t necessarily make them better; only different.
Whether or not a Lineage Support is valuable depends on the meta. They are not universally useful. As a rule of thumb, however, the rarer the Lineage Support, the more desirable it is in the trade market of PoE 2, though the degree varies.
How to Get Lineage Supports in Path of Exile 2
Unlike regular Support Gems, Lineage Supports cannot be acquired using Uncut Support Gems. There are three main ways players can get Lineage Supports in PoE 2.
- Endgame Global Drops: Some Lineage Supports become a part of the global loot table after players enter the Atlas of Worlds and begin mapping. These cannot be obtained during the campaign.
- Exclusive Boss Drops: A select number of powerful Lineage Supports can only be obtained as drops from certain bosses in PoE 2. The Zarokh’s Refrain, for example, can only drop from Zarokh the Temporal, the Trial of the Sekhemas boss.
- Abyssal Depths: Some Lineage Gems are exclusively available as rewards for clearing Abyssal content like the Abyssal Depths and the Dark Domain.
Lineage Gem drop rate is dictated by how valuable it is. The more desirable a gem, the less it will appear as loot.
