Summary

  • Path of Exile 2's recent Steam reviews are now "Mostly Negative."
  • The ongoing fan backlash is centered on the recent Dawn of the Hunt update, which many players find to be exceedingly punishing.
  • Developer GGG will roll out some emergency revisions on April 11 in a bid to make Dawn of the Hunt easier.

Path of Exile 2's recent Steam reviews have fallen into the "Mostly Negative" category. The ongoing player backlash stems from a recent Path of Exile 2 update.

The newest Path of Exile 2 patch rolled out on April 4. Called Dawn of the Hunt, the update bumped the game's version number up to 0.2.0 and introduced a new Huntress Class, five additional Ascendancy Classes, 25 extra skills, and over 100 Support Gems, among other novelties. However, not all Dawn of the Hunt changes have been met with a positive reception from players, with some proving to be highly controversial.

Fan disappointment with Path of Exile 2's new update has cratered the action RPG's Steam user reviews. As of April 10, the game's recent reviews are below the "Mostly Negative" threshold, based on nearly 12,000 user scores. While its lifetime reviews are still "Mostly Positive," the game's overall player recommendation rating currently sits at 73.13%, just 3.14 points above the "Mixed" rating. The review-bombing campaign was at its peak on April 7, when over 2,300 negative reviews were added in a single day. The backlash subsided over the next few days, suggesting that Path of Exile 2 might retain its "Mostly Positive" lifetime rating—at least for the time being.

New Path of Exile 2 Update With Emergency Fixes Coming Soon

The ongoing fan backlash against Path of Exile 2: Dawn of the Hunt has already elicited a response from Grinding Gear Games, with the developer pledging to keep refining the update in order to address some common player complaints. The first batch of changes will arrive as part of the 0.2.0e update, which is scheduled to roll out on April 11, circa 3pm PDT / 6pm EDT / 10pm CET.

The new patch will slow down some monsters in an attempt to address fan grievances about being overwhelmed by mobs that pursue them relentlessly and attack incessantly. Several bosses, including Uxmal and Viper Napuatzi, are being nerfed, while the minion revive timers are being revised so that each successive minion death fills them less and less. The latter change should minimize scenarios in which all the player's minions are dead, while the timer keeps getting reset to 7.5 seconds, making it difficult to regain any sort of momentum.

Path of Exile 2 Review-Bombing Campaign Currently Seems Limited to Steam

The Path of Exile 2 console ports haven't been review-bombed like the PC release. Granted, the Xbox version of the game is still sitting at just 3.4 stars on the Microsoft Store, but its PlayStation counterpart has a significantly higher 4.25-star rating on the PS Store as of April 10.
