Pax Dei is an MMORPG that breaks the norm in almost everything MMORPGs are known for, from quests and NPCs to scripted adventures like dungeons or raids. There's a building system similar to survival games, with no hunger bars in this one. You can settle down and create a homestead or meet up with friends to form an entire town or even a bandit gang. This beginner's guide comes with a to-do list and the major gameplay systems in the game. So, let’s get started.

MMORPGs That Are Perfect For Beginners

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when looking at the genre of MMORPGs, but if you don’t quite know where to start, we have you covered!

Character Creation

At the onset of your first gameplay session, you will be offered many customization options to build your alter ego. This step is important because Pax Dei is essentially an MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) game, which simply means that players will not be able to create their custom servers with settings that suit their preferences; there will always be an online server, where you will have to interact with random players.

Starting Locations

Pax Dei Starting Locations

Once you’ve selected the character you want to move forward with, you must choose your starting location from one of four general regions (each consisting of multiple zones acting like servers):

Regions and Zones

  • Merrie: Down, Wiht, Ulaid, Ardbog, Gael
  • Kerys: Llydaw, Bronyr, Pladenn, Tremen, Ewyas, Dolavon
  • Ancien: Lavedan, Tolosa, Armanhac, Tursan, Gravas, Salias
  • Innis Gallia: Nones, Trecassis, Aras, Arennes, Langres, Jura

Every spot has a population meter where you can opt for crowded places or select isolated ones. Pick a terrain you prefer that is suitable for the biome and the look of each starting zone.

The Woods of Old and Eerie Pine Forest are biomes Gallia has on display. Forsaken Forest can be seen interacting with the Windswept Steppe, among more options. Vegetation and Resources are unique for each biome.

Gathering Resources and Building

Pax Dei Resource Gathering

After spawning into the game, your initial goal will be to collect stones, sticks, and berries to unlock crafting recipes. Just like other crafting-survival games, your first goal is to find a place to settle and build a roof over your head.

It accomplishes this by allowing you to claim a plot and open up your buildable area. Having done that, now is your time to gather abundant building materials.

Get Your Hands On Tools

Create some basic tools to farm resources quicker as a beginner. The usage and purpose of these tools are discussed below.

Construction Hammer

Used for building structures, allowing you to construct a basic shelter with walls, a door, and a roof.

Iron Chopping Axe

Essential for gathering wood, enabling you to cut down trees quickly for construction and crafting.

Stone Pickaxe

Used for mining stone and ores, helping you gather essential materials for building and crafting advanced items.

Upgrade Your Crafting Skills to Craft Better Equipment

Crafting skills are important as they enable you to create various items that enhance your gameplay, such as better equipment, consumables, and decorative items. Higher crafting skill levels allow you to craft more advanced and efficient items.

Furthermore, there’s a concept of Success Rate in Pax Dei. Each material that you can craft will have a success rate attached to it, and the level of your crafting skills will determine whether you will successfully be able to craft that specific item.

Failing to complete a crafting job would make you lose half of your materials. They will either fall to the ground or return to your inventory. On the brighter side, this would still help you gain experience, thereby contributing to your crafting skills overall.

Here are some primary crafting skills:

  • Winemaking and Brewing
  • Jewelry Making
  • Baking
  • Cooking
  • Tailoring
  • Alchemy
  • Charcuterie
  • Fletching
  • Leatherworking
  • Carpentry
  • Armor Smithing
  • Blacksmithing
  • Weapon Smithing
  • Herbalism
  • Mining
  • Woodcutting

Increase Your Combat Effectiveness With Combat Skills

Combat Skills are the key to survival in Pax Dei. These abilities increase your combat effectiveness, both against enemies and other players. As your skill level increases, so does your damage and defensive abilities.

However, it is vital to note that at the time of writing, the early access version of the game shows a rather lagging mechanism to the combat in this game. As a beginner, you’ll notice when you’re being attacked by wolves or bears, their attacks are not as smooth as other mechanics.

Although this is a disadvantage, you can respawn at a nearby shrine. Here are the main combat skills and their importance:

  • Axes
  • Block
  • Bows
  • Crossbows
  • Greataxes
  • Greatmauls
  • Greatswords
  • Handspears
  • Light Polearms
  • Maces
  • Polearms
  • Sledgehammers
  • Swords
  • Two-Handed Spears
  • Warhammer

Build And Upgrade Your Crafting Stations

Build And Upgrade Your Crafting Stations

The skill levels are linked to the progression system of the game. The higher your craft skill, the better items you can make, such as cutting down trees faster and using higher-level wood when leveling your woodcutting.

There are crafting stations for more higher-tier items in the game. To get started, build a Wood Chopping Block to unlock many common wood recipes quickly. Then, build a Carpenter's Workbench using the following:

  • 4 Rough Woods
  • 20 Wooden Pegs
  • 6 Rough Wooden Planks

You need crafting stations like charcoal kilns and furnaces to make metal ingots and other advanced resources.
