Peak throws all sorts of hazards at climbers as they progress through each of the island's biomes, but the first real surprise that players will encounter are ticks. These pesky little creatures start to show up fairly early in Peak, and they're especially dangerous for solo climbers who are braving the mountain by themselves.
Peak - What Does 'New Island' Mean?
Peak, the indie game from Landcrab, has four biomes for you to climb through, but the maps might be different each time you play. Here's how it works.
Ticks are a silent hazard in Peak. You can pick one up without even realizing it, and they'll slowly drain your energy until you realize you've got a problem. Thankfully, ticks are pretty easy to deal with in most scenarios, and they actually have some uses once you've removed them.
How to Remove Ticks in Peak
Ticks start to appear in the Tropics region, which is the second biome that you'll encounter in Peak. After hitting the first campfire and proceeding into the Tropics, you have a small chance of randomly picking up a tick while you're exploring.
Ticks will slowly poison you, reducing your maximum stamina and making climbing much more difficult. There isn't anything to notify you when a tick latches onto you, though, so you'll just have to keep a close eye on your stamina meter and keep looking down to check your legs every so often.
It's much easier to spot ticks in co-op sessions since your friends will have an easier time spotting these insects.
Another player can remove a tick from your body by approaching you and holding E. It only takes a few seconds to collect it, and the poison will stop building up as soon as it's gone. You'll still need to find an antidote to fully fix your poison problems, though, so don't let ticks feed on you for too long unless you want a significantly nerfed stamina bar. Stick to the vines and try to climb through the Tropics as fast as possible to avoid ticks.
As a solo player, you can only remove a tick from yourself once they've gotten big enough. Even if you notice them early, you won't be able to yank them off until they've sucked a considerable amount of your blood. There's no way to avoid this poison build up as a solo player, so prepare for the Tropics ahead of time with healing items in your backpack.
What to Do with Ticks in Peak
You can simply toss the ticks away once you've collected them, but you can also eat them for a small stamina boost if you're hungry. It's not ideal, but survival is survival. It'll also help you earn the Foraging Badge since a tick technically counts as a type of berry (for some reason)!
