Persona players are used to playing as silent protagonists, but those protagonists have different names depending on which piece of media they appear in. That applies to Persona 3 Portable, where both the male and female protagonists have a number of different names that are canonically accurate.

Though most fans know of Persona 3 as a game, it’s actually much more than that. Persona 3 spawned a series of anime movies, a manga, and even a stage play based on its story. This isn’t even counting its semi-sequel Persona 3: FES or spin-offs like Persona Q.

Persona 3 Portable players face a lot of choices in terms of which Social Links to spend time with and which Social Stats to raise up. The first choice they’re faced with is the character’s name, though. Here are the names of Persona 3 Portable’s two main characters.

What is the Persona 3 Protagonist’s Name?

In the Persona 3 games, the protagonist’s name is Makoto Yuki. This name is also used in Persona 3 Portable, Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight, and the Persona 3 movies. However, other pieces of Persona 3 media give him a different name, similar to how Ren Amamiya was named Akira Kurusu in the manga adaptation.

The official Persona 3 manga adaptation has a protagonist named Minato Arisato, while the Persona 3 stage plays used the name Sakuya Shiomi. Though the player can hypothetically use any of those names for their character, his official name for the games is Makoto Yuki.

What is the Persona 3 Portable Female Main Character’s Real Name?

Persona 3 Portable’s female main character is officially named Kotone Shiomi. This name is used in both the game as well as the series of stage plays that were held based on the games. Though the male character was given a different name in the plays, that wasn’t the case with the female protagonist, as she was also referred to as Kotone Shiomi on stage.

Persona 3 Portable

This name isn’t consistently used in other Persona 3 media, most notably the Persona 3 Portable Dear Girls manga. The character is referred to with a number of different nicknames in unofficial translations. Many fans also refer to her as Minako Arisato, a name similar to the male protagonist’s name in the manga.

Despite the differences in names, the male and female protagonists of Persona 3 Portable have identical backstories. Though she hasn’t been featured as much as the male protagonist, Persona 3 Portable’s female protagonist is still widely popular with fans and has been presented alongside the original hero as equals in Persona media and press materials. Regardless of which hero they choose to play as, players can look forward to a long journey in Persona 3 Portable.

Persona 3 Portable is available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Game Pass, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
